For Question 23:

Several scientists were involved in determining the structure of DNA. To what extent did the quality of collaboration and communication between these scientists impact on their scientific research? 5 MARKS

The board of studies answer says:
"Watson, Crick, Franklin and Wilkins were the scientists who determined the structure of DNA. Watson and Crick had a good relationship and worked closely together. Franklin and Wilkins did not work well together and there was some level of competition between them.
Some of Franklin’s images and results were shown to Watson and Crick by Wilkins. Franklin kept her results secret, which may have caused her to not publish them in time for her discovery to be acknowledged. The close collaboration between Watson and Crick, with the aid of Wilkins, enabled them to determine and publish their DNA model first.
"

However, the SUCCESS ONE HSC book says this:

"The work of scientists that led to the determination of DNA was primarily independent rather than a true collaborative effort. Wilkins and Franklin worked in the same laboratory; however, their working relationship was strained as a result of a number of factors. These include the fact that Wilkins did not look upon Franklin as his equal and the fact that Franklin was unable to participate in collegial discussion in the male dominated scientific community. Wilkins and Franklin did not work with Watson and Crick, who were independently working on the same project. However, Watson and Crick did work collaboratively with each other. It was only because of Wilkins' casual disclosure of Franklin's X-ray crystallography photographs of DNA molecules to Watson (without her knowledge or permission) that Watson and Crick were able to produce their own now famous model. This does not demonstrate intentional collaboration on the part of those involved; if anything it highlights the competition between these scientists. However, two of the scientists collaborated, had the four scientists collaborated, the DNA structure would have been discovered earlier."

I am wondering which answer to this question is more correct. Even though the first one is from Board of Studies, I agree with the SUCCESS ONE Answer. So I pose the question, which do you think is the better / more correct answer?

Any of the two answers really. Both answers spoke about the collaboration and communication so any answer will do.

The second one would probably be a better answer for the HSC.

First looks a bit short
