If they "force" you to use a certain method they must provide enough details for you to discern what the method is, and then it becomes easier (e.g they cannot say using complex numbers integrate etc)

Yes but strictly speaking that isn't a vector method.

Also sometimes it gets really ugly?

E.g (x-1)^2+(y)^2+z^2=25
And (x-2)^2 (y+2)^2+(z+1)^2= 36 would be extremely hard to solve

Yeah. Sadly ugly just happens sometimes. Not sure how you’d use vectors, however there is a method I would recommend. Finding the ratio of r1 to r1 you can find the perpendicular line that separates the circles in the ratio r1:r2 or something along those lines. Would be a lot easier with working paper
