I just received my result for half yearly 4 units. I only got 86% for it (weight 30%). Do you guys think it still possible to get final mark for 4 units over 90 (I have to get over 90 for 4 units to get through my course at uni)?????

yes.
86% for an ext 2 maths test is heaps good. but what is your rank?
and what do you mean you have to get band 6 for ext 2 to get through your course in uni? im sure you mean UAI right?
anyways youre on the right track for a band 6 anyways so i wouldnt worry about it too much.

Rank matters more than marks. So even if you fail and you come first that's still good

what sort of raw marks do you need for >90?

any estimates?

there seems to be lots of discrepancies to this, with some people saying you need like 90/120, some saying 70/120.

It varies too much to give you a certain value. One person might be right to say 70/120 but it might change the next yr to be 80 n then 40 the year after that.

i really doubt 40/120 would give you band 6.....even if the test was very difficult

Righto, as far as i know...

There is no 'Band 6' in ext subjects, just band 4, but i get wot u mean.

Secondly, ur raw mark means absolutely nofin: its ur rank, so u can still get above 90 for ur HSC.

Wot mark should u be aiming for? Well, my teacher says that if u can get 2/3 of the paper, ur almost guranteed a 90+ HSC mark.

Hope it helps

no that is incorrect....the band E4 applies when youre doing a 1 unit ext subject, ie doing extension maths only, but if youre doing extention 2 maths, then theres band 6 for both extension 1, and extension 2.
however for english, both extension 1 and extension 2 are out of 50, which means that the highest band is E4.

Hey about ranking, I heard from my career adviser said that u said be in top ten to garantee a mark >90. Don''t know whether it is true or not, but I think he mean top ten of the state not in school

top ten in the state to guarentee a 90?
thats abysmal
even top 20 or top 30 in a good selective school would practically guarentee you >90

in where did my post did i mention that maths ext 1 and maths ext were out of 50?
i was saying that both english extention 1 and english 2 were both marked out of 50, which gives E4 the highest band.
and yes i am well aware that maths ext 1 and maths 2, if both done as 4 unit mathematics that they both count as out of 100.

if you go to a good selective school, how hard is it really to get 95+ for 4unit, is it alot harder than getting a 90?

since 95 is higher than 90 of course its going to be harder, which means you have to work a tad harder going from 90 to 95.
however, if you go to a good selective school and get like a top 10 rank, youre pretty much guarenteed 95+.
i guess you have to ask students who studied at a selective school to get a better opinion
my 2 cents

60% is still heaps to go
just make sure you do well in your trials because that makes up a huge chunk of your remaining assessments, and dont lose hope!
plus youve still got the externals to go, so youre not there yet

My older brother went to a selective school, he ranked 2nd and ended up getting 95 for the hsc. And he did tons of maths questions, practice, etc....and he likes math.
Even if you have a low rank, the marks could be really close together anyway, and if you're in a selective school, there's always the chance of your marks getting brought up if your school does well
