hey guys :)
i was told that in the hsc if you do really well and other people taking the same subject do poorly it will drag down your marks, ive asked around but im getting a lot of mixed messages about whether or not thats true...just wondering if any of you know anything about this or have heard anything similar?
opinions and advice are much appreciated :)

If you are ranked first internally and you get the heist raw mark externally, you will not be pulled down no matter how badly the cohort performs. However if you are not ranked first, or at least close to first, you will be affected depending on how well you do externally and how well they do externally.

What would happen then if say you were ranked 3rd and you performed exceptionally well, while 1st and 2nd didn't do so well.

Your internal would be lower than your external (i.e. you would be dragged down). Note guys that things like dragging down are overhyped-> if you're at an average school, then obviously it is way easier to top the school so you can't compare similar ranks between a selective school say and a normal public school.

Well this actually happened at my school in a sub, 1st to 3rd were all tightly ranked. 1st and 2nd bombed, 3rd did well and third only ended up with one mark less than their external(cause there was a 2 mark difference). Of course it depends on margins and such. It went like this with internal first and external second;

1st-90 76- HSC mark 83
2nd-89 78- HSC mark 84
3rd-88 90- HSC mark 89

Good story at my school this year about this topic for English (adv). Three people were ranked 1st internally all on full marks for the entire year, however the person below them who would have been ranked either 4th or 5th did really well in the externals.......nek minnit..... First in State. So it goes to show, that even though he was only ranked 4th in the school, you can still get first in state. It's all about the relative differences between the marks.

meaning that only people who are getting marks within the average would be affected?

Kinda. It's more like, if you're right up there or extremely close, your cohort will have a minimal effect on you. This is in regards to an average school though.
