i am doing music 1 atm and i am going through the process of picking HSC pieces. i have a couple ideas for example:
This is the moment from Jekyll and Hyde (musical)
The unexpected song from song and dance (musical)
Bridge over troubled Water
Ave Maria
and many more...
i am a singer and have been trained operatic/classically and have about a 4 octave range
i want to find a piece thats going to show off my voice!!
Have you got any ideas?
Ave Maria is one of my favorite songs. If you sing opera, why don't you sing all opera/classical pieces. Not that I have anything against musical theatre...

Have you thought about doing any arias? Like Un bel di vedremo from Madam Butterfly...heh.

Or something from one of the more "Operettas", Like Les Mis or Carmen?

Hello cool kids

1. Chromazone by Mike Stern (on Tenor Sax)
2. Let it Free by Dave Koz (on Soprano sax)
3. YYZ by Rush (on Bass)
4. Birdland by Weather Report (on Bass)

Birdland will be fun because I know HSC examiners love Jaco so it'll be sweet!!

Good luck everyone!!!!!:)

I'm hoping to do:
Blue Moon - Arrangement by Tommy Emmanuel
Under The Bridge - Red Hot Chili Peppers
Nothing Else Matters - Metallica
And there was another one, a classical piece. I forget the name right now.

the verve - bittersweet symphony (piano/vocals)
muse - butterflies & hurricanes (piano/vocals)

and if i do change my mind, the substitute will be..

eva cassidy - songbird (guitar/vocals)

rae, from what i read, ave maria would be great! take a look at the carpenters' version of that, it's beautiful =]

You bastard, I'm doing it too. Except I'm playing with a guitarist who's also using it as one of his performance pieces, so I'm hoping it'll turn it really well.

My pieces in addition to YYZ are:
Badinerie - Bach (bass)
Flor D'Luna - Santana (guitar part on bass)
Wonderful Slippery Thing - Guthrie Govan (guitar part on bass)

heyyyy band geeks!
I play the flute and i'm playing

Core: Hysterical penguins
Elective 1: Viva Voce - Musical theatre (tone colour comparison between west side story overture and candide overture)
Elective 2: Jazz - "Jazzy" - 7th movement from the claude bolling suite for flute and jazz piano trio
Elective 3: Instrument and its repitiore - "Le Merle Noir" - Oliver Messaen

My schools music department never gets below a mid band 5 in their hsc so you can imagine the pressure coming from them

I'm doing all perf (voice) for music 2 and extension. kill me.

'Moon Spirit' Dorothy Mewes (Core Australian)
Music 2 Elective: Classical
ergo I've got a Mozart and a Haydn.
"Un Moto di Gioia" from Le Nozze di Figaro
"Now the Dancing Sunbeams Play"

Extension:
"Let Me Wander Not Unseen" Handel
"An Den Mond" (Holty libretto) Schubert
"La Regatta Veneziana" (duet) Rossini

fever. I love that song. then again, I'm a sucker for velvet voices the likes of bublé, cullum...(moving away from 'velvet') bellamy, levine (* la maroon 5)....haha

if you're looking for interesting accompaniment for the bublé piece, maybe experiment with some timbres. your typical crotchet bass line can always be jazzed up. :) looks like a great repertoire though. missy higgins! nice.

heyoooo.

I did mine last year and got 78..i did 4 performances and they were all pretty simple songs.

RATM-Bulls on Parade
The Braided- Speak to the skies
The Braided-Hibernation
Initation-Tommy Emmanuel

I played them all pretty well..but my HSC was kinda of a joke..like i didnt need good marks...but 78 was good for me..I should have played some punk songs..i wish i did..i would have laughed.

but if your struggling for rock pieces look at the pieces from The braided..its my mates band so they played with me in my HSC but i jsut replaced there guitarist.

i think there website is www.myspace.com/thebraided

ohh..and play reeko or greencorn by nofx for ur hsc anyone..that would b cool.
