So im literally hyperventilating, every time a micro thought of year 11 crosses my mind, it harnesses a very harsh and overwhelming flow of neurones. I feel that the subjects i have chosen are an over load, i had the choice of picking music over business studies but was told that it is very hard to get over 70 in the HSC for music. Also i heard it scales you down by Alot!

so now im stuck with these subjects, they are mediocre, and require much effort, any suggestions, help. Should I do music and risk my future?
By the way i have been coming first in music since year 9 with marks in the 90's, is there really as i hear a big difference from elective music to senior music?

Does music really scale you down that much?

Prelim subjects:
Advanced English
2u Maths
Modern History
Ancient History
Geography
Business studies??

If you like music and have a reasonable amount of confidence in it, then i see no harm in doing it
In my opinion, business studies is extremely boring, but it is fun for others

so just do what you like and what you're good at

Do what you love.

I picked chem in yr 11 because I thought it would get me a better ATAR, even though I really wanted to do business studies. I hated it so much, and ended up dropping it at the end of the year anyway.

There is no point, in my opinion, in doing a subject that you don't like and that is going to stress you out. If you love music and think you can do well in it, then why not go for it?

Relax man, stop over thinking things. Year 11 really isn't anywhere even close to a hair as scary as you think it is in terms of workload. Sure you do have to do a bit more but come on, most people do fuck all up to this point, a little effort wont do you any harm. Your subjects are fine, if you think you'll enjoy music more, do music.

+1 to everyone above. Not as if my saying this will help, but yr11 is really nothing to worry about. Try to distract yourself with other things, and sleep as much as possible.

Also,
Hyperventilation is a result of involuntary over-breathing. Rate and depth of breathing are more than is necessary to maintain normal levels of carbon dioxide in the blood. Consequently, carbon dioxide in the blood falls, causing a range of symptons. Signs may include shallow, rapid breathing, rapid pulse, feeling of suffocatin, dizziness, pins and needles, tingling or dramatic involuntary spasms of hands and feet.

Management of emotive hyperventilation:
1. Follow DRABC
2. Calm casualty and remove to a quiet, private place.
3. Encourage slow, regular breathing- slowly count breaths aloud.
4. Seek medical aid.
good luck =\

Ok

first things first.. rub one out.

Now, yr 11 is a time for mistakes and fun. it is meaningless except for learning what to do and what not to do. MARKS ARE NOT IMPORTANT. if i made any mistake in yr 11 it was trying to get good marks rather than finding what works and what doesn't i.e. going into english with a memorised essay or a summarised scaffold (i always went with memorised because i was too scared of getting a low mark... that means i always had to memorise for hsc which is tiring... so better to trial and error different techniques)

and don't worry u are 3 terms away from being yr 12. even yr 12 gives alot of room for huge screw ups. (trust me i was coming bottom 5 for two subjects half way through the year of yr 12 and still worked my way up the ranks in time for hsc and i did 10 units)

so trust me... coming from a fresh ex yr 12 student... yr 11 is a playground

as for subjects... i know this goes against the grain but unless you are CERTAIN of your ability in a low scaling subject... choose the better scaling subject cuz u don't kno what you like and what you don't until hsc exams neway (sc VERY different to prelim which is VERY different to hsc)

"So im literally hyperventilating, every time a micro thought of year 11 crosses my mind, it harnesses a very harsh and overwhelming flow of neurones."

Calm down, mate. Think of it as just another year in high school. A lot of people say year 11 is the best year for them-- year 12 is the time where stress should begin.

"I feel that the subjects i have chosen are an over load, i had the choice of picking music over business studies but was told that it is very hard to get over 70 in the HSC for music. Also i heard it scales you down by Alot!"

Although I believe it's important to be aware of scaling, don't let it control your life. I would be lying if I said 'Music Scales well'. a 91% would go down to approximately 73%, whilst a 97% would go down to approximately 90%.

"so now im stuck with these subjects, they are mediocre, and require much effort, any suggestions, help. Should I do music and risk my future?"

All subjects are going to be hard work. But if you're passionate then the chances of you WANTING to work hard greatly increase, and so do your results. You need a little perspective, dude. Some of us (such as myself) are doing 13 units next year-- from what i've read, it seems like you're only doing 12. Most of us don't seem to be stressed, and our workload will be bigger than yours. So calm down.

"By the way i have been coming first in music since year 9 with marks in the 90's, is there really as i hear a big difference from elective music to senior music?"

I suppose it depends on your school. At my school, Stage 5 is actually quite difficult, and HSC music is a step down in the way that there is less complicated theory work.

"Does music really scale you down that much?"

I've used an ATAR calculator as a resource here. Let's say, for arguments sake, that you get exactly 90/100 in all of your HSC subjects. If you did

English Advanced, Mathematics, Ancient History, Modern History, Geo and Music: Your ATAR would be 95.0

If you did Business Studies instead of music, your ATAR would be 95.35.

MATRIX exaggerates a bit, but you get the idea. There is a noticeable difference, but will it really matter to you?

It's just year 11, calm down and enjoy yourself... Don't stress yourself before you need to :)

I've got a few words to say here, some sympathetic, some harsh.

Lets start with the sympathetic.

1. Don't Panic. (Anyone get the Douglas Adam's reference here?)

Seriously, Year ELEVEN of all times is NOT the time to start stressing. Actually, it is NEVER a great time to start stressing. (But in Yr 12 you won't be able to help it).

Think about it - Why are you living in fear of what's coming up? Why doubt yourself? Why not look forwards to learning new things, to be able to specialise and to choose subjects that you love and you're good at? Why not appreciate the freedom that comes with being a senior?

The HSC is a great stepping stone to everything that comes up in tertiary studies. Now is a great time to look ahead - are you looking at studying a certain course? Heard of a cool job you might like to pursue? Overseas scholarships? Now is the time to start planning and looking at the next two years as the means to an end - namely the rest of your life.

Seriously, get excited don't get scared.

2. You know what? The more you actually like your subjects, the more you relax and CHILL the better you will do. This was the exact advice given to me by a mate who got 100 UAI and is now studying at Harvard. He was right.

Chill out. You will make life so much easier for yourself if you stopped thinking in negative terms of "OMG!!! PANICPANICPANIC!". There's no need to put unnecessary pressure on yourself. As long as you're prepared to work hard (but play hard too), to listen to your teachers and to simply do your best - everything will take care of itself.

3. Do you even realise all the ppl who have your back? Your parents, your teachers, your classmates, your school principal etc. There's so many ppl who are out there to make the HSC as easy for you as possible.

Now somewhat harsher words.

a. Every year, some people fall apart in Yr 12 because they simply couldn't cope with the stress. They needn't have imploded like that :bomb:

But some do. Reason? Because they hyped it up for themselves, they started stressing early (ie. Yr 9/10) and simply built it up and up until the tension just got unbearable. So I'm saying, DO NOT follow that path. Stressing this early doesn't bode well for further down the track.

The HSC is a marathon, not a sprint. You want to last long - that means taking care of yourself and making sure you're mentally strong. You want to have enough in the tank to peak in October/November, Yr 12, 2011.

b. I looked at one of your past posts.

After four years of excruciatingly, agonising pain and turmoil,
School ain't a tea party, but nor is it intended to be torture. Lighten up! You're going to have to find ways to make the HSC fun, to make life easier for yourself.

Anyway, good luck, chill out, have FUN throughout the next 2 years.

Don't choose subjects according to scaling alone. I may be hypocritical because scaling played a part in my subject choice, but I do enjoy science and math. Choose music if you are confident in it and will enjoy it.

I did 2/3 U Maths for my prelims (accelerated) and there was nothing to be worried about. Listen to your teacher and do your homework and everything will be fine.

Which music did you use, Music 1 or Music 2? Because Music 2 scales far better than any other 2U course.

But Year 11 is not a time ti start stressing. It's a time to get your shit together and remove any weaklinks in your subjects. If you still have weaklinks after Year 11, drop them.

+ 1 Good advice, use your time to get into a solid study routine and work out which subjects you're really keen on for the actual HSC. Dun stress out, everyone is going through the same thing.

I used music 1-- I assumed that one who studies Music II wouldn't be worried about scaling, because yes, it scales very well
