1.Go straight to the point, don't write useless crap or repeat question.

Example: what is one plus one?
Good answer: two
Bad answer: One plus one is equal to two, although it should be noted that some philosophers questions the concept of numbers.

2.Practice past papers.

3. use reading time to do multiple choice.

4. don't need to be neat, let the marker suffer as they are paid to do so.

Pay attention to the number of marks per question, and answer accordingly. A two mark question only needs one or two sentences (maths is obviously different). A six mark question usually requires about 1/2 - 3/4 of a page. And don't let the number of lines they give you mess with your head. The marks are more important than the lines. The last question in our year 11 music half yearly had heaps of space for writing, we all went nuts, and wrote like, 2 or 3 pages, and then realised that it was only a 4 mark question.

If you get stuck, then make a note of it, and come back to it. You're better off leaving a question half answered and getting through everything else, than fully answering one question, and leaving another 3 or 4 completely blank because you ran out of time, because they can't mark what you haven't written down.

Make sure you use your reading time. When you go through, look at questions where you have a choice of more than one thing, and work out which option you'll take. Look at the marks allocated for each question. When you've gone right through the paper, use the rest of the reading time to do multiple choice questions, read comprehension texts, plan essays etc.

stick batteries on your pens, its heavy at first but overtime you get used to it and it strengthens your muscles. when an exam comes along, take it off and because its a whole lot lighter you write faster

Simple: keep practicing within the set time that you have and you'll be fine.

But if, by some misfortune you dont manage to finish, who cares!

In my english HSC exam, i missed out on a conclusion, and in the last essay, which was on Powerplay, i only managed to write 3 pages, which only consisted of a paragraph on the other text that i chose. I freaked out completely but i still ended up getting 83 for the exam (which i was really happy with).

One thing which strikes me with most students nowadays, apart from the inability to spell and to use 'practice' (noun) instead of 'practise' (verb) (unless you are using American English), is the atrocious handwriting. This often comes from using a wrong grip of the pen and the inability to do running writing. As a result writing is excruciatingly slow. In this age of computers nobody cares about good handwriting practices any more and this is mainly because even the younger teachers do not know how to write - so who is going to correct you and guide you? But despite widespread availabilty of computers, you still have to complete your answers, essays etc in your own handwriting. I find the practice by some private schools of offering slow handwriting as a reason for special consideration as pathetic.

Of course bad handwriting may not be a reason in your case.

(If there is enough demand for an affordable Handwriting Workshop I'd be happy to organise one)

  • Practice, practice, practice!
  • do past papers in exam conditions (important!)
  • get to the point straight away, don't waffle on about
  • in reading time- calculate how many minutes u have for each Qs. eg <1 minute for 1 mark Q
  • go to the next Q if u're not sure/ struggling with the Q. Put a mark ie " *" next to Q and u can go back when u have time
  • ask teachers' advices (they should give u tips on that)
  • go to councilor, any one, etc for help
  • special provision? to get more time (u better ask if u allow to have it)
hopefully these would help :)

What the hell?? help the poor guy out. Don't tell him this useless crap.

practice practice practice. And if it still soesn't work, go see a specialist to make sure you don't have some form of learning disorder, if you do you may be able to get extra time.

Time yourself as much as you can at home, and allow yourself less time than indicated on past papers so by the time you do the real exam you have more time.

lol i remember back in year 11, in paper 2 english adv of our full yearlys, we had to do 3 essays and i did 1 really good one, 1 was okay, and the last one was just one page lol, my teachers told me the following tips, which have helped me heaps:
  • get straight to the point and dont write wishy washy statements
  • time management, always stick to the allocated time, even if youve only done 1 page, it helps in the long run
  • practice a lot of qus under exam conditions
  • sleep well on the night before, you dont want to waste time yawning during an exam - it kills a lot of the momentum
  • dont daydream doing an exam - this is really important!!!
