i have been having troble understanding conduction & valance electron enerygy bands in relation to semi metals & semi conductors (pg. 3 ideaas to implementation).

i have found reference to the bands being both overlapping and divided by a small energy gap in relation to semi conductors. which is true? what's the difference between a semi metal & a semi conductor? could anyone help? thax sophi

There is no energy gap in semimetals because the conduction band and the valence band overlap.
In semiconductors there is an energy gap of about 1eV.

You dont need to know about semimetals tho...just conductors, semiconductors and insulators...
