How is it not a measure of difficulty if scores are all over the place? One exam alone determines the bulk of your final mark, therefore capable students that could have performed relatively well in the HSC may be subject to a fail mark in the IB.
Not really all over the place - some assessments are just worth ridiculously little. I mean, 50% of your HSC is still determined by a single exam (for most subjects), and when you factor in how your external marks effect your internal marks cause of moderation then it's also pretty huge as well.

And since, if we're determining the difficulty of an exam by how big a single test is worth then the Chinese Gaokao is the supreme being (100% based off one exam)- but it is rarely accepted as a qualification overseas

I lived overseas last year, and was stuck with this decision as well- To stay or move back to Aus for the HSC.

I agree with what other people have said- if you plan on studying overseas, IB is definitely great preparation (extremely rigorous, but apparently makes the transition to Uni easier)
The HSC does allow you to specialise though- with IB you must pick from the 6 'groups'
The IB score will generally convert to a great ATAR..

A lot of things to weigh up, I essentially went with the HSC because I was familiar with the NSW Curriculum, planned on going to Uni here and was already struggling with the rigour of an International Curriculum :)
