Im worried because i think i might have stuffed up my music aural exam a little bit but have done well all year and in trials. Will i still get the top hsc mark in my year or does it depend?

You'll get the top exam mark as your internal mark.

Then you get your own exam mark.

Add the two together and divide by 2 to get the overall hsc mark

Not necessarily the top HSC mark but you get the top INTERNAL mark.

The top exam mark will become the top internal mark which will then become your assessment mark. You will keep your own exam mark. The average of those two marks will be your final HSC mark.

if I'm 2nd for example and I get 90 in the exam...

and number one takes my exam mark as their assessment mark

what exam mark do I get now? Do I still keep mine?

Say Person 1 is Rank 1
Person 2 is Rank 2
Person 3 is Rank 3

Person 1 on the day gets 86
Person 2 on the day gets 90
Person 3 gets 84

Everyone keeps that mark as their exam mark. But Person 1 and 2 essentially "swap" for their internal assessment mark. So it looks like this:

Person 1: 86 exam, 90 internal
Person 2: 90 exam, 86 internal

Both add and then divide by two. I believe both have a HSC mark of 88?

Although I could be totally wrong, that's just my understanding - more than happy to be corrected.

Person one keeps their exam mark of 86 and gets 90 for their internal mark giving them a final HSC mark of 88.

Person 2 keeps their exam mark of 90 but... what their internal will be isn't possible to determine from the above information as we haven't been told the gap between Person 1 and Person 2 and that gap will also be maintained. If Person 2 was 10 marks behind Person 1 they will end up with an exam mark of about 80 but if they were one mark behind they will end up with an internal mark of closer to 89.
