Some people may perform extremely well in 3 unit yet do badly in 4 unit. Is 4 unit something entirely different from 3 unit?

4 unit is about 3/4 an extension on the 3 unit work and 1/4 "new" work. I mean, mechanics is an extension on further apps. of cal. and s.h.m etc, conic is an extension on the locus and parabola work, graphs is just harder 3 unit graphs, integration is just some more work on integration, polynomials is just polynomials with some complex numbers.

The only topic thats not connected to 3 unit is complex numbers. But im not saying they are exactly the same, but they are not exactly entirely different.

I think he's doing HSC 2/3unit maths in Year 10 and will be doing HSC 4 unit maths in Year 11. hey kurt, you're going to miss Maths a lot when you go to Year 12 as you would've completed all HSC math courses!!!

Just to clarify, i am just doing the 2 unit HSC Mathematics exam this year, and 3/4 unit HSC exam next year. But i would have been doing the 3 unit HSC maths exam this year but unfortunately the times table at my school has English on during some of the 3 unit lessions and so i couldnt do it this year =(

New Senior Mathematics (ie Fitzpatrick) is probably the easiest of the 4 unit texts. You could just start going through that now (ie in year 11) and then when you start year 12 just move onto Cambridge or Patel for 4 unit.

I completely agree... but the Fitzpatrick text is a good text to use while in year 11 to get a feel for 4 unit maths and get to know the basic concepts. But i would completely suggest using a much harder text when in year 12.

Personally I don't think that Fitzpatrick is very good at explaining or laying foundations for maths... My maths teacher knows all these really weird authors that I have not heard of and thinks they are Math God's so I will have to follow her way... xD

I can't wait to start Ext.2 Maths. I just hope I have a friend or two that will do the 4U course with me.

I found that Fitzpatrick was far too brief in his explanation of a lot of the concepts. I use it as an auxiliary textbook, for alternate explanations and more questions, but I used Patel for learning new stuff.

I am very very concerned about making it into maths extension 2. I am currently ranked 3rd out of 90 people in 2 unit and 3 unit maths, with marks in the 90s. However, my teacher seems to dislike the idea of me trying out for 4 unit maths, and in my school, teachers have the right to stop you from entering a course, despite the fact that your marks are very very good. How ironic.

Anyway, the teacher's reasons seem to centered around the fact that I wanted to pick General Maths in Year 10. She just doesn't think I have enough "oomph" for Maths.
But should teachers be allowed to stop you from entering a course (if your marks are tops)? What should I do if I am denied the right to do 4 unit maths?


EDIT: I was wrong the whole time. The teachers wanted me to do it!!! And I signed up for it. I should be happy, but I get this bad feeling that I will fail miserably at it.

If you do 4 unit, do you automatically get 100% in 2 unit or does 2unit have no value and 2 and 4 unit count as 2 units each? as i have heard both. Regardless of the answer i'm doing 4 unit.

because I don't really want to do just 10 units
originally I was going to do ext1 maths, ext1 english, french, chem and bio
but by the end of yr11, i really didn't like chem so i started thinking, maybe do 4U maths and 3U english and bio and french?
do 11units instead of 12 where i have to learn a whole extra subject
and i was also thinking because I dropped chem, I could use those free periods to work on maths

except...its 4U maths o_o and i'm not in the top 80
i dont know what to do!! because i'm not amazing in french and bio doesn't scale well either
should i just do 3U maths, but do really well in it?
would that be enough to get into psych at usyd?
i'm really scared of just doing 10 units...

oh, and i go to top 5 selective school, and one where the teachers don't force you to drop extension maths

Well i'm going to have 10 units with 4U maths, i'm not scared, it's not like on the day of the hsc you're gunna get into the test and forget every single thing you've learnt. And if anyone is that forgetful i doubt having 12 units will help them.

Just try it for a while. They said anyone ranked 100 and less can do 4U at your school.

im currently at the end of yr 11, and doing relatively well in my ext 1 class. My teacher has recommended me to do ext 2 as well, but problem is, im already doing 6 and 1/2 subjects which means i have to drop one.(considering bus studies)

i'm not sure what i want to do in uni, but im leaning towards chem engineering. Would keeping bus studies give me versatility or should i drop it anyways since ext 2 will help in that particular course (n scales high as well )?

That's so stupid.
A 4-unit student going to tutoring. I don't why its funny. If you do 4-unit, you don't need help, you should be doing everything by yourself. Also, 4-unit students are smart. They don't need them. ONLY DO IT IF YOU ARE SMART.

Never had a tutor. All you gotta do is listen in class. Those of you with tutors drop em and save some money. Just listen and follow the teachers instructions. If you have a bad teacher then just get Coroneos and Cambridge and you are set.
