If I were to defer my course/s for a year, would I then have to pay upfront the following year? Or would I still get a loan from the government until I can pay off my uni expenses?

You're still eligible. You just don't apply for HECS until the end of next year/beginning of 2017 when you're enrolling in your course.

You're fine! So many people defer uni first year and take a gap year. Just talk to your uni about deferring your enrolment & you'll be able to apply for HECS when you decide to start up your course
