Hey, I've been discussing this with a friend. My report has come back and I am 10th in General maths. It's a pretty poor-ranked school, from memory I'd say 300-500, and I dont see 10 people in the class getting above 90 (Probably 1 or 2 might get 90, while most of those ranked 8 - 10 will get 75 - 85).

Am I screwed for maths? I know there's always the "study hard and kill the exam and you will do alright." But realistically, I'm coming 10th at a shitty school. What's the chances of me doing well in maths?

FYI. I average anywhere from 75 - 83% in the trials and other maths exams, but I think my positioning in the class with affect this.

Well, what is your exact school rank, there is a big difference between a 300 ranked school and 500 ranked school. Also, what final mark for maths would mean your "screwed"? Also, you have 13 units which means 3 wont count.

Hey do you have a link to the school rankings, then I could tell you exactly where my school is. Maths probably wont be counted for me, But I do another low scaling subject (Multimedia) so i'm a little worried. 'screwed' for me is anything that will drop my atar, I'm not trying to get Band sixes for all my subjects, I just want to get my required Atar. I.E If I do horrible in Maths and my Multimedia is scaled down, that's 4 units.

School rank can be found here http://images.smh.com.au/file/2010/12/15/2097102/HSC Performance 2010.pdf

Well, in general maths probably doesnt scale too much better then multimedia. Also, since your doing 13 units, maths and one unit of multimedia probably wont count towards your ATAR, which will greatly reduce there impact.
My school is ranked 480. I thought that because 3 units isnt possible, it's just one 2 unit course that doesnt count. eg. If I do bad in Multi and maths, only my worst subject isnt counted since I only have 1 unit remaining, not two.

Only your best 10 units count. That means if general doesnt count, then only one unit of multimedia will.

How will they divide a 2 unit subject for 1 unit?

Thanks for the quick replies by the way.

Hey, I don't quite understand what that means. Can you explain that a bit further?
Most subjects are two units, so to counter this they scale out of 50 for each unit in a subject.

Esstenially if you get a scalled mark of 40/50 for maths general your HSC mark will be 80/100 because it is two units. Since you do 13 units 3 units worth of marks won't count, which basically means a full subject and a half a subjects work won't count.

Say if your marks are

Ancient 40/50
Modern 43/50
His Ext 42/50
English Advance 44/50
Ext 1 English 47/50
Ext 2 English 50/50
Multimedia 30/50
General Maths 31/50

Because of this All of Multimedia won't count plus one unit of General maths however the 31/50 (Which is only one unit of marks ) will be a small part of your ATAR

Basically think of each unit worth 50 marks so that 2unit subjects are 100 marks. This means the worse subject you do in plus half of the second worse subject you do won't count

That's actually really relieving. Thankyou so much.

Don't worry, your school rank has nothing to do with it. It is based on last years performance. Look im not at a high ranked school (in fact a really bad one, the teachers are a pile of shit who don't give you the time of day, because they are to busy dealing with dumb arse tits from lower years). However i am one of the exceptions who has a good attitude and commitment to work. I am coming 4/5 / 34 for maths. It's good considering bar English it's my weakest subject and plus i only cram because i focus on my biology, histories more. I get high 70's stroke 80's. I know i can improve from my trial mark, because i have learnt from my mistakes. So all im indicating is; don't write your cohort off.

Good idea to follow this.

School ranks shouldn't care you, remember that you can always and will improve from your mistakes.

When i recieve my results card, or whatever - As long as i achieve 75+ i won't care what my results are. As long as on my external marks i get80+ for everything. Because at the end of the day, i can say that is my potential, and the reason my marks are lower is from the flawed system of which uses others marks to shape yours.
I don't tend to care about marks, i tend to care more about ranks.

I am most happy when I ranked first for things regardless of the mark.
