So i'm writing a six minute speech on belonging, specifically Migrant Hostel and 10 Mary Street by Peter Skryznecki I was wondering what some good quotes and their techniques would be for "Belonging can be created, supported or broken by relationships" as a point. thankyou!

I hate English with a passion and it is my worst subject. I never really looked at 10 Mary Street, but I have some info on Migrant Hostel you may or may not want to use.

You can link belonging to the line "Nationalities sought each other out instincitvely", saying that Strzynecki's family felt belonging because of being with other Polish families, sharing the same background and history.

Also twice in the poem Strzynecki uses a bird motif, in the lines "Like a homing pigeon - Circling to get its bearings" and "For over two years we lived like birds of passage". In the first line you can say something like they were lost, and trying to get a feel for their surroundings whilst in the Migrant Hostel. You can say that the second line is a simile as well.

The line at the end "That had only begun - or were dying" could be said to be juxtaposition maybe, in saying that their life in Poland died, but their life is Australia was born.
