This may sound incredibly stupid
but is a UAI/ATAR mark made from just HSC final EXAM marks or is it also combined with Assignments/assessments over the Year 12 year?

i do really well in assessments but then FAIL exams

e.g low 90's for all physics exams and then 50% in yearlies

No, your ATAR is made from your averaged raw examination mark and your moderated assessment mark.

It does not just rely on the exam though (well if you understand the moderating/aligning process it kind of does), but you ranks are very important - just remember that.
