This thread better not get moved from news and current affairs...

There has been another attack against an Indian man, the nature of the crime indicates it is racially motivated. An indian man was burnt alive in his car as he parked it

BBC News - Indian man attacked and set alight in Melbourne
here is the story from the BBC

I am not saying this attack IS racially motivated, but it is quite plausible theory.

I mean why would 4 men wait around with a can of kerosene until the find someone they can burn alive. I admit that in all the other attacks, it was quite plausible to say that they weren't racially motivated, but in this attack is quite the opposite. I think it is best for the police to assume the opposite as well.

Clearly the media attention to this issue has scratched the surface of Australia, something that is held within a minority. We do not know the size of this problem, but clearly it is large enough to do some damage and it cannot be ignored.

It's pretty hard to try and stop, it's all good and well to try and bring media attention to the situation, but there's always going to be minorities who see multiculturalism as a threat to Australia.

its interesting you say that - the Victorian police are leaning towards non-racial motivations, when your right - it is very plausible that it would be racially motivated. - why would a bunch of men wait around for this particular individual?

and the clothes that were burnt/shed off - apparently the police said they had found no traces of them??

i wish we knew more facts

Regardless of whether THIS attack was racially motivated, there are heaps of people who think that attacks like this will rid us of these immigrants, and they're probably right, as apparently since these attacks began applications for student visas have dropped by like 20%.

And obviously the government will deny any racial motivation in relation to these attacks, as students from Asia, and India boost the economy through there education fees, and of course if the Government admits that race has played a role in these attacks, then there will be a dramatic fall students travelling to Aus for uni.

wow you should be a investigator.

You have a valid point here - why would the Aus gov admit to racial attacks occuring in Aus? Good will?

the international student market is the 3rd biggest money maker for Aus...

and Visas have actually gone down by 46%

But to be honest im scared about how the Australian team will be recieved at the commonwealth games in Dehli this year...

Good point on the Commonwealth games, it's going to be a little dicey I think.

These attacks have been happening up in Newcastle Uni for a few years apparently, and they're blatant racial attacks, like 4 or 5 guys, waiting in bushs, and bashing just Indian students. I don't know why these kinds of attacks are only gaining more attention now :S

The current media attention is appropriate, after this event.

However this problem could have been totally avoided if the Indian government simply listed all the crap suburbs where it is dangerous to walk by your self after dark.

Most immigrants think Australia is safe Everywhere.

I hope the Indian government is specific in their travel advisories

Doesn't this just prove it was a targeted personal attack, if they were going to wait around and prepare themselves for it?

The hysterics of the media have just exacerbated the problem. When you start baselessly calling a whole country racist and accuse them of purposefully carrying out these attacks, well, you end up evoking the attitude of "There aren't any racist attacks going on, WE'LL NOW show you what a racist attack really is."

It's somewhat much like a kid losing something at school and turning on and blaming the whole class for it - no-one is going to be appreciative in helping to resolve the problem.

Perhaps it's more that since Indian students are in so great a number that they are more represented in these attacks. Most of them work part time jobs as well, especially with the student from Melbourne who worked at Hungry Jacks at night. I mean, I wouldn't be working at such a late time, let alone walking on the street. More often than not, due to the language barrier that the international students face, it is the fact that most of them have jobs at dangerous hours which increases the risk of attack.

Citing the student from Melbourne as an example, it was an attack at night in a park. The attackers aren't going to shine a flashlight on him and go "Oh, he's Indian! Let's stab him now."
These are often opportunistic crimes that anyone can become a victim of. Just the majority people would lessen the risk by not venturing out at night, going out in groups, working at late hours etc.

I was saying the Australian media attention is appropriate

However the Indian media cannot be blamed for the current problem. I think the current media attention, has scratched the surface or a small segment of the Australian population. The majority of people are going to ignore any labelling of Australia as racist

It is the racist people who are going to take this as an opportunity to attack Indians

Listen, usually im a sympathetic guy. but the fucken indian media has blown this out of proportion. people are being bashed everyday around the world. in melbourne (some would say the crime capital of Australia) indians are not the only ones being assaluted (although being burnt is inhumane and unacceptable). but fuck these indians piss me off " VE VANT JUSTICE"

reasons they're being attacked? :
1. they're indian
2. their lifestyle - driving taxis and thinking that they are superior.
3. they stink
4. they're indian

if india doesnt like it they should go back to india, where the crime rate is much higher. Frankly, i just hate the way they come to our country and demand shit.

Exactly!

As if thugs are going "Show us your passport. Australian? Okay keep going. Indian?" *bash bash*

These attacks happen merely out of being at the wrong place in the wrong time. It just so happens than on average, a higher amount of Indian students are engaging in activities which occur in high risk places/times, hence their over-representation in attacks.

It is the racist people who are going to take this as an opportunity to attack Indians
Exactly.
Due to the frankly outlandish nature of the Indian media overreacting, we most likely have a small niche group of racist minorities which are now "showing them" what being targeted really is like.

Yes, Australia has racist undertones. But we're not generally overt about it.

The past attacks have actually been perpetrated by those of ethnic descent themselves, so I can't really see that being the motive.

This is a little bit ironic.
Your post is racist..and yet you complain when the Inidian government says Australia is a racist country. It's the people like you who make people think that Australia is racist even though we're not (well the majority of people aren't lol) :p
Oh and one other thing how is it "our" country? Everyone migrated here at some point just as people from other countries are migrating here now. The only difference is they're not white. lol

Lies. I hardly think areas like Wagga Wagga and Esendon in Melbourne contain significant if any visible ethnic minorities. On the news and according to demographics they are white suburbs. Australian police can only prey it is other ethnics so as to shift the blame on to others for racist attacks.
