to seriously consider To Live Is To Die by Metallica as an instrumental is debatable...as there are "lyrics to it"

There is about 4 lines of spoken word near the end, which was a quote from Cliff Burton, to whom the song was dedicated. Its inconsequential, and personally i think its metallica's best instrumental.

Metal Machine Music by Lou Reed involved all these different industrial sounds mashed together, it wasnt avant garde, it was retarded. His Album 'The Raven' then consisted of him reciting poetry by Edgar Allen Poe over music. He's a cool guy, but we can only be so big fans.

The Invocation Of The Young Pumpkins - Frank Zappa & The Mothers

Do Sigor Ros count?

Nightwish is awesome. I love "Nemo", especially the orchestra version.... (that's not instrumental)
