So far we're half way through trials, and I have a feeling I haven't done as well as I would have liked. Anyways my assessment marks are just as bad, as are my ranks. I know the whole moderating marks process and how your ranks determine your mark etc... But say if you're ranked second last or the last few in subjects, but achieve a relatively high mark in the HSC where does that leave you? Will it be fair and even out or are you automatically given low marks, with the influence of the other students who have done crap in their marks too.. Because i've come to the realization of what i want to do and what course i want to get into, a bit too late though. Just asking if anyone has experienced having low ranks/internal marks but aced the actual hsc and got a decent mark in the high 70s?

You will keep your high external HSC Mark. However, unfortunately, if you came last or second last, you would receive the lowest or near the bottom internal mark.

Then, the mark you actually get is the average of those two.

So, if you managed to ace externals, getting eg 95 but due to your ranking throughout the year got an internal mark of 65...

(65+95)/2 = 80

Hence, getting high 70s is possible :)
