I heard that you if you can "outperform" your rank by a lot in a HSC exam, so that your internal rank doesn't impact the assessment mark given. Is this true? I've just heard so many conflicting things from teachers and peers. Thanks

If you perform really well, chances are your overall cohort's pool of ranks will also increase. Hence the mark will moderated higher than before. But that is to say that your internal rank will still take the presiding dominance over your position in the pool of marks. (i.e. if you are not ranked first, but you come first externally, that does not guarantee the highest internal mark, although it may help with a slightly higher moderated mark)

nah this doesnt happen. One of my mates in the year above bombed his first chem assessment so he ended up having to cop an 89 internal mark but in the hsc he got 95 external, but his overall was 92. Another one got a 96 internal for chem but ended up with a 100 in the external exam so overall ws 98 and this did allow him to get a sr as ik of a few people who too got 98s overall but didnt get sr

your internal rank will always affect your overall outcome - but doing well in the externals will never hurt it.
