hey guys,
how r u supposed to tell whether a particular ion will react with water to form either OH- or H30+ when reacted with water?
e.g. how r u supposed to determine whether Mg 2+ will react with water.

GENERALLY speaking,

strong acid + strong base --> neutral salt + water

weak acid + weak base --> neutral salt + water

s. acid + w. base --> acidic salt + water

w. acid + s. base --> basic salt + water

last equation is more basic than acidic :D

<table border="2"><tbody><tr><th>Acid</th><th>Base</th><th>Salt pH</th></tr><tr><td>strong</td><td>strong</td><td>pH = 7</td></tr><tr><td>weak</td><td>strong</td><td>pH > 7</td></tr><tr><td>strong</td><td>weak</td><td>pH < 7</td></tr><tr><td>weak</td><td>weak</td><td>depends on which is stronger</td></tr></tbody></table>

Oops, thanks for the correction.
