Their only viable exit strat. is to defeat the insurgency. If not, combined with the ghosts of Vietnam, the U.S. will revert to a kind of isolationism. Right or wrong aside, having no cohesive leadership would be a fucking calamity.

Having said that, if Regan's hard-core patriotic acting could fix it in the 80s, I dont see why Arny cant fix it too.

I think they should pull out, but you also can't now it's too dangerous either way. It is like the israeli/palastinian conflict, it is a sensitive situtaiton, to much conflict iwth wihtin the coutrny of iraq between sunni and shi'a, and al lot of the reasons are spread by those that wish to keep oil pouring in, i am sure u cna guess hwo they are.

I believe it's a matter of global importance that they dont pull out the same way they did in Vietnam. A new Democratic government will hopefully sort it out a little. Most of the problems in Iraq are a result of Rumsfeld's incompetence.

Given the low level of Iraqs current oil output, nothing which happens in Iraq has too much effect on the rest of the world. If Iraq had no oil, would anyone care what happens there?

Disfunctional african republics have civil wars, military coups and new corrupt presidents installed and overthrown nearly every year. But they don't have any oil so who cares?

I think you have pinpointed the situation right there supercharged..
it all boils down to the economic advantages which the USA will gain. at the moment this is in negative gearing and doesn'y look like it will change soon.

The US gains little to no economic advantage from the war. They do not physically take the oil from Iraq and use it or sell it to other nations.

As for the question, they will withdraw when a democratic government is established that can keep the peace.

They got nothing out of Vietnam. I think the principle at stake is more than enough interest for them.

They got one thing. The learned the power of teh bombzorz.

If they drop 4 nukes on Iraq. There will be no more insurgence. Fair enough it'll be a global humanitarian crises, but HRs don't exist anymore. We've given to much power to our government.

I propose the breaking up of all nation states into waring clan-states. 40,000 years of Aboriginal culture built to that. I figure we should to.

And I assume you think the US gains little to no economic advantage in keeping the Saudi royal family in power either

It's nothing more than regional security from afar as practiced by the US administration.

While it would be best for the oppressive capitalist pigs and the backward Mohametans to fight it out in Iraq, my thoughts go out to the Iraqis who will suffer under the puppet capitalist fundamentalist Shia regime and who will never see the light of the Soviet revolution.

I always hear people bitching about the saudi government, and how bush should have gone to war against saudi arabia...
Would that really make anyone happy? As far as I can tell that's one of the stupidest thoughts people have ever had.
