They dont personally have to discover something, it could also be an underlying message. What's your text, I may be able to help??

it's for my creative writing it is about a man that has nothing to live for, no family or fiends. just a sad old man... i guess it could be that he discovers that he won't have any change in his life and its going to continue to be miserable?

I personally would not risk this, because the best creative writing is about transformation, it is far better to make an empowering discovery than a stagnant one-even when there the discovery is negative-there should be some sort of positivity beyond the initial miserable condition, if your character starts and ends the story at the same way, then technically there is little plot progression to talk about. I would imagine that this will make your discovery story very hard to adapt to stimuli that requires 'transformative for individual and society' type of requirement.
