I'm thinking of doing Islamic Studies as program for arts degree, either that or Chinese (cos i'm asian, and i don't know any asian language), or Psychology :S!

Which would benefit a teaching career more?

What do you want to teach? Where do you want to teach (local/overseas)?

Learning to speak Arabic is much easier than learning to read more classical Arabic. Which asian language are you thinking of learning? Most of them would be harder than Arabic.

If you're considering teaching overseas, teaching English overseas is quite popular (in Japan, the Gulf, etc). Good to see you wanting to pick up a language though - being bilingual pretty important, and knowing one language is more of a handicap than a norm these days.

DON'T LISTEN TO THEM, learning arabic is not as hard as u think if u r committed and u are willing to put ur mind into it. I learnt arabic since yr 9 and now i cn read the Koran really well.

I have a LOT of people enrolled in Secondary and Primary teaching in my psych classes - probably because of all the educational psychology and developmental psychology subjects. It's definitely applicable to teaching as a major.

+1
despite her broken english, she does make a valid point and roughly any language is easier to interpret as long as ur committed as zazzy said :)

I personally find Arabic really easy to pick up. Given how cheap it is to travel and live in the Arab world, I think it's a 'cheap' language to pick up, and certainly useful, if not interesting.

I can only read quranic Arabic and it took me several years to master it. tbqh its not a really nice language to listen to simply because the linguistic style for all Semite languages really use the throat to communicate. sorta yuck tbqh.

A greek friend of mine did Islamic studies when she was doing primary school teaching, and she loved it. She thought it was really easy.

Personally, I learnt the arabic language real quick ( I wanted to read the quran and understand it my self ) .

Its really easy and very helpful too, I say go for it!!
