is it a good idea to do 3U+4U maths in one year at TAFE if I've only done 2U? (1 Viewer)

What circumstances prohibit you from doing it at a high school?

I am in year 11 now. I did not choose 3U maths because I did not think I was good enough. My university says that 4U is a recommendation to get into my course."

I want to teach maths because I am doing really well in 2U and I love maths now. There are some advanced units I want to do that require 4U maths.

Errr dude you should really try to somehow do the yr 11 3U course elsewhere and enrol in 4U maths by term 4 at your school. it would be a massive inconvenience to do it at tafe. as to how you're gonna do that, i don't know. talk to the head teacher of maths.

I asked the head teacher of maths if I could do 3U and he said no. My only option is to do 3U maths (year 11 and 12) + 4U maths (year 12) at TAFE. I want to know if it is a good idea doing both at TAFE in 9 months. Do you think it is too much work?

I am only halfway through the 2U maths textbook at the moment. Do you think I should try finishing the entire 2U maths textbook before term 3 so when term 3 comes, I can do the entire 3U maths textbook which means that when term 4 starts, I can start preparing for year 12 3U maths and 4U maths?

u really shouldve done 3U and then dropped if it was too hard but too late now :p Also do you know how the teaching is at TAFE? If you are extremely keen to do this, i recommend you get a private tutor that can help you finish the 2u, 3u and 4u courses in the 18 months before your hsc. definitely possible :)

I know you won't like this suggestion, but the other option is to repeat year 11.

I'm not sure how TAFE could let you into the Ext 1 course this year any more than your school can. They are bound by the same requirements as schools for students completing the Preliminary year. The preliminary 'year' is already half over. And completing the preliminary year in Ext 1 is a requirement for starting the Ext 2 course.

I feel it'd be highly unrealistic of you, unless you are exceptionally good in your maths.

Why would it be unrealistic? Do you think I can do it if I get 80+ for my final 2U maths mark?

I'm not trying to discourage you. But I'm worried for you that you may be unrealistic. Of course, not knowing your true capabilities, I'm only guessing. And I hope I'm wrong.

But why do you think 80+ in 2U is such an achievement?

Why don't you have your schoolmates show you some 3U and 4U maths, and figure out for yourself if you can handle the full 3U+4U in 1 year. I know some students who are good in 2U would still struggle with 3U+4U over 2 years, let alone 1.

Convince ur teacher to let u do 3u. My friend joined end of term 2 last year and now hes doing fine. U can independently study it and then sit final assessments and school can give u an average?
Also, I don't think 3u is that much harder than 2u. Maybe a little, but not as much as it sounds like. Just try it, u have nothing to lose.

80% in 2u is not an achievement sorry. you should be getting 95+ in 2u if you wanna succeed in 4u imo... if you are this desperate to do the damn thing at tafe, my recommendation is that you get a tutor and finish of the yr 11 part of the 3u course this year, so that in yr 12 you will only have 3u and 4u to deal with just like everyone else. like drongo said, some people struggle with the course over 2 years... it isn't that easy, nor that hard i guess.the question is wont you still have to do your 2u assessments at school or something??

I think a borderline Ext 2 student should be getting at least 90% in a year 11 2 unit yearly set by an average selective high school.

If you are able to balance your work well, then it is most certainly possible. The reason why I say this is because you have the Christmas holidays, and you can get through a LOT during that time. When does the TAFE course start? Also, if you can afford it, I suggest hiring a tutor. My sister studied her mathematics at TAFE (Extension 2), and feedback was quite poor.
