I'm currently in my HSC year and i'm looking into what to study after Year 12. First, how could i get into a film studies course.. like what ATAR would i need at uni, because the only requirements I see is for other test unrelated to HSC, also could i study this along with a commerce degree of some sort? I live in NSW, so any uni suggestions in Sydney region would be appreciated! Also would a Gap Year affect this? Because i'm looking at maybe travelling next year to family overseas, and maybe take some extra time to decide what career path i'm aiming for, thanks guys!

P.S. To anyone who studied film studies, is it worth it, and what sort of jobs can you be offered? I'm interested in maybe getting into a field in television or even film director, not sure. But i also want to do a business degree to be safe if film doesn't get me anywhere.

Might be better doing a University degree for business, and a diploma for film studies at well-known film schools such as AFTRS etc.

USYD offers film majors in degrees such as;
Bach of Arts;
Bachelor of Arts and Bachelor of Advanced Studies;
More degrees offering specialisation can be found here: https://sydney.edu.au/courses/subject-areas/major/film-studies0.html

So you probably could do a combined degree of commerce(95) /arts (80 atar) and major respectively. Could not find the atar cut-off for combined degree but I think it is in a uac atar-cutoff guide.

UNSW
Bachelor of Arts and Business (90, lowest enterance 88)

SCP18V1 Screen Practice and Production
SCS18V1 Screen, Sound, Performance

UTS

https://www.uts.edu.au/future-students/communication/undergraduate/media-arts-and-production

Bachelor of Music and Sound Design 71.05, With International Studies: 73.15

Bachelor of Communication (Media Arts and Production) 88.45, With International Studies: 86.55

Bachelor of Media 85 (https://courses.mq.edu.au/2019/domestic/undergraduate/bachelor-of-media)

Misc:
Most Universities may have film studies called something else, look under bachelor of arts, communication, and media and creative intelligence as it is likely that I missed some when looking for university degrees.

You can defer university degrees so that you can start a gap year. Most non-university film studies diplomas require a portfolio.

Sydney Film School and AFTRs are probably among the best known for Film Studies.

So it might be advisable to study uni/diploma at different places.

The university of Newcastle offers a course called Bachelor of creative industries which covers everything from film production, to photography to acting, basically everything. The atar I think is 60 but the median is a 70 atar.

With business as well they have a Bachelor of Creative Industries / Bachelor of Innovation and Entrepreneurship if that is close to what you want.

Good luck with the HSC and hope you get into what you want.
