We just did our speech on our Area of Study, and i've got a mark (15/20). Honestly, i wasn't that impressed because in year 11, i would usually get 18+. I feel like i have the confidence that is needed in a presentation. Like body language and tone and whatnots. Yet, i got 15 which is the average score. So, i was baffled by this appalling result, and as usual i would compare with my peers. And i realised something crucial, those that went overtime and didn't finish their speech, was not penalise at all. The time limit was 5 and i did it in 4.40 and had what i believe a succinct conclusion. Normally, i would be deviated from those who went overtime, right? No.

EXTRA INFO: Our presentation needs to include 3 texts and a time limit of 5min.

I was agitated and i started to rationalise this ordeal. Is my analysis that bad? I'll just do well in the mid terms. So i continue my days without a sound. Today a guy who missed out on doing the speech supposedly overdue like 3 weeks ago, presented in my english class. His analysis was sound, but what made me stared at my computer screen as oppose watching him was that he was reading from his palm cards. He went overtime, didn't finish his last text, and didn't complete his conclusion. 4 hours later, he got his result. (17/20) We'll call him guy A.

I was furious. So i calmed myself, there's a perfectly good explanation for this. After school, i went up to the teacher and tell her that my marks were unjustified. There was absolutely no good explanation whatsoever that my presentation standards were lower than guy A. We had what i thought was a calm argument. And what i got out of it is that, she marked the presentation solely on the analysis of the text. Whether the student finished it or not, it doesn't matter. As long as the analysis was good, they get their marks. So for instance, if i did my presentation and over that 5 minutes, i've only mentioned 1.5 text, i would be marked based on that 1.5 text. Then why don't you just call it a show and tell. A song is a good song no matter how the musician plays it right? Even if the flute was defected and the performance was undermined by the musician failure in memorising their notes. What kind of presentation does not involve the markings of a presentation! She replied, she was confident in her markings and she did this in her old school.

Here's my question, have you ever come across a teacher who marks a presentation based on the analysis of the text? Regardless of the student completing their task, or went pass the time limit, have no body language, and reads straight out from their palm cards.

I understand why you may be unhappy about this apparent bias, if you feel this strongly about it, you might want to refer to the relevant marking criteria for the speech (if any was given out) to make some sort of appeal with your English head teacher. Otherwise, you can consider applying to change classes or accept the fact that your teacher appears to be biased and has a marking standard that appears to deviate from the normal practice. However, I am not going to make a definitive judgment on the basis that I don't completely know the details (I.e. what your teacher is like, what was the complete assessment task description etc). Use this opportunity to prepare harder for future English assessment tasks-don't let one assessment define your attitude and mark, and don't dwell on too much on the guy who had overdue assessment task and still got 17/20-he might well have a very valid reason (i.e. medical) for doing the assessment this late.

We have an 'acting' head of english, so no good there. She didn't hand out the criteria sheet before the assessment, and the guy didn't have a medical excuse, for 2 weeks he went overseas.
Yeah i guess you're right. If anything this motivated me a little, already started preparing for the mid terms. Going to show that teacher what I'm made of!

YES my english teacher in yr 12 was a fucking bitch who I hated. Still forced my way through her bias and got 84 HSC mark for advanced. THAT WAS MY WEAKEST SUBJECT LOL

Don't let this bother you too much. I was in a similar position last term for my first assessment where I'd received 12/20 for a speech that I'd honestly deserved more for.
