I like. Logitech = Win. The seagate SATA drives are nice, too, I have 2 x 160gb drives. Fast. More RAM would be nice, but if you're using the computer for a average purpose, then don't bother.

Just to clarify - is that a DVD reader, and then a separate DVD writer ? You don't need both, since the writer can read too. Not sure how that's meant to read in the specs.

This is nice if you're not doing heavy gaming, but if you want to do that, get a higher end card.

$1,500 - Intel Pentium 540 3.2

This one is good from the P4 series. You won't notice the difference from 3.2 --> 3.4 + saves you $100.

IEEE1394

DVI = Digital Video Input. You can capture video with this.
IEEE1394 = FireWire connection = A LOT faster than USB. Also used for video capture, or plugging in devices such as an iPod.

I don't see any benefit in getting a 256mb card over a 128mb. I challenge anyone to find me results on two identical cards, one with 128mb and another with 256mb, which can show the superiority of 256mb in any conditions.
People claim it will matter in the future, indeed, but how far away in the future? For most, too far away to matter.

Also, I would take the Athlon64. The Pentiums aren't 64-bit. You will benefit from 64-bit once the new XP is relseased, how much you will benefit is yet to be seen.

I'm not interested in an Intel vs. AMD discussion, but I'm not a big fan of the next generation Windows, Longhorn, or the Palladium infrastructure it's built upon, giving Microsoft more control over what you can and cannot do. 64-bit is a non-issue if you're buying a computer at this very second.

That is assuming you don't.... *acquire* the new WinXP later. 64-bit can also be useful if your running a Linux box since there are 64-bit distros out, which is something i wan't to try out ASAP.

If you plan on taking it anywhere or moving it around yourself make sure it's not TOO heavy. Also non-branded cases won't last as long (supposedly) as other cases.. but then again I forked out $200 for mine

You don't need both A RW will read thme as well. Brand here doesn't really matter I don't think, but I prefer LG to Liteon.. or was that the other way around.. either way most DVD brands are the same with different branding...

I use USB for everything soo..
And I just got an 80gig SATA drive, have to install it, but I hear SATA is nice and fast so good for your apps/windows.

The internet keyboard is GOOD. Logitech keyboards are so pretty and so soft and really really nice. Optical mice are good as well, altho if you already have a kb/mouse from the computer you're currently on you don't really need this kind of accessory..

firewire (IEEE1394) is nice to have .. 2 ports are kind of silly I think since there are few firewire devices you'll be using constantly. nice # of usb ports .. front usb ports are a godsend

Good enough, the audio on the motherboard is decent if you're just gonna be listening to music And I don't know about the 9200

I'd go for an intel if you're not planning to overclock it, I hear they're a lot cooler and quieter than AMD (although yes, they're more expensive)

Hm, In regards to too many ports - I think 8 USB ports might be a little excessive. But the more the merrier if they're coming for free =P. Most firewire cards come with with 2 posts also, anti, I'm not sure if you can just get one port. I use one for digital video and one for my ipod 8)

But it runs faster than P4 2.2GHz and should be somewhat similar to P4 3.0GHz
I'd choose the $1,420 - AMD Athlon64 3000 but that's only because I want to try AMD (never had one in my life). It might be hotter than P4, I'm not very sure.

BTW I think the DVI is not to capture video, but to output to a high-end LCD monitor which supports digital input (yours doesn't)... the specs of ur monitor is here, http://www.benq.com.au/HomeShowProduct.asp?prodID=353 although in the brochure it says 16ms response time

Yeah, my bad, the newer video cards have normal output as well as DVI output, so if you choose to go LCD in the future, you don't need a new card that can support it. I would guess the entire Radeon 9000 series has DVI, since the 9200 is advertised with it, and my 9800 still has it.

The P4 cooler is noisy when the CPU heats up, very noisy

but problem is the P4 cooler is very efficient and it is hard to find a better cooler, unless you
what to go with one of those 1kg copper monsters.

athlon64/sempr0n is much more quiet.

EDIT: note dell computers have a wind tunnel leading out of computer, it does a good job keeping the cpu fan quiet.
