Oh really?, this is an article from the Ha'aretz newspaper.

sounds like the Israelis arnt that happy as you claim

Olmert cannot remain in the prime minister's office
By Ari Shavit

Ehud Olmert may decide to accept the French proposal for a cease-fire and unconditional surrender to Hezbollah. That is his privilege. Olmert is a prime minister whom journalists invented, journalists protected, and whose rule journalists preserved. Now the journalists are saying run away. That's legitimate. Unwise, but legitimate.

However, one thing should be clear: If Olmert runs away now from the war he initiated, he will not be able to remain prime minister for even one more day. Chutzpah has its limits. You cannot lead an entire nation to war promising victory, produce humiliating defeat and remain in power. You cannot bury 120 Israelis in cemeteries, keep a million Israelis in shelters for a month, wear down deterrent power, bring the next war very close, and then say - oops, I made a mistake. That was not the intention. Pass me a cigar, please.

There is no mistake Ehud Olmert did not make this past month. He went to war hastily, without properly gauging the outcome. He blindly followed the military without asking the necessary questions. He mistakenly gambled on air operations, was strangely late with the ground operation, and failed to implement the army's original plan, much more daring and sophisticated than that which was implemented. And after arrogantly and hastily bursting into war, Olmert managed it hesitantly, unfocused and limp. He neglected the home front and abandoned the residents of the north. He also failed shamefully on the diplomatic front.

Still, if Olmert had come to his senses as Golda Meir did during the Yom Kippur War, if he had become a leader, established a war cabinet and called the nation to a supreme effort that would change the face of the battle, a penetrating discussion of his failures could be postponed. But in blinking first over the past 24 hours, he has become an incorrigible political personality. Therefore, the day Nasrallah comes out of his bunker and declares victory to the whole world, Olmert must not be in the prime minister's office. Post-war battered and bleeding Israel needs a new start and a new leader. It needs a real prime minister.

Sam... fighting against an geurilla army using asymmetric techniques, that's been preparing for such a battle for years isn't a simple thing.

I agree, which is why this war was a complete waste of time, waste of life.

The article above shows that even some Israelis can see that

I wouldn't say it has been a complete waste of time for Israel. They got to destroy alot of infrastructure, and now they get an indirect occupation. When "peace keeping" troops move in they will be keeping an eye on Hezbollah.

I view it as a small skirmish in a long war, you can't really tell if it is going to be positive or negative for Israel.

They didnt harm Hezbollah militarily.

Destroying infrastructure isnt really an achievement, anything acieved will be through diplomacy.

I disagree. While the fighters themselves can be fluid and escape attack, alot of weaponry/missiles have been destroyed.

Jordan: That israeli article seems to be in favor of more violence, just some different battle plan. It is possible the reason the PM didn't take up such a plan was because it was even more violent and he had pressure from the international community.

As a percentage of their overall arsenal, the damage isnt really that significant. The IDF has stated that 80% was destroyed, yet the whole month Hezbollah kept on resisting Israeli invasion, and kept on firing rockets (I think they increased)

But they still believe this particular war (or battle plan) was a waste of time.

Just because rocket attacks increased doesn't mean the number of rockets wasn't reduced.

Brigitte Gabriel's Speech At Duke University

"I'm proud and honored to stand here today as a Lebanese speaking for
Israel, the only democracy in the Middle East. As someone who was raised
in an Arabic country, I want to give you a glimpse into the heart of the
Arabic world.

I was raised in Lebanon where I was taught that the Jews are evil,
Israel is the devil, and the only time we will have peace in the Middle
East is when we kill all the Jews and drive them into the sea.

When the Muslims and Palestinians declared jihad on the Christians in
1975, they started massacring the Christians city after city. I ended up
living in a bomb shelter underground from age 10 to 17, without
electricity, eating grass to live, and crawling under sniper bullets to
a spring to get water.

It was Israel who came to help the Christians in Lebanon. My mother was
wounded by a Muslim shell and was taken into an Israeli hospital for
treatment. When we entered the emergency room, I was shocked at what I
saw. There were hundreds of people wounded, Muslims, Palestinians,
Lebanese Christians, and Israeli soldiers lying on the floor. The
doctors treated everyone according to their injury. They treated my
mother before they treated the Israeli soldier lying next to her. They
didn't see religion, they didn't see political affiliation; they saw
people in need and they helped.

For the first time in my life, I experienced a human quality that I know
my culture would not have shown to their enemy. I experienced the values
of the Israelis, who were able to love their enemy in their most trying
moments. I spent 22 days at that hospital; those days changed my life
and the way I believe information, the way I listen to the radio or to
television. I realized that I was sold a fabricated lie by my government
about the Jews and Israel, which was so far from reality. I knew for a
fact that if I were a Jew standing in an Arab hospital, I would be
lynched and thrown to the ground as shouts of joy of "Allahu Akbar" (God
is great) echoed through the hospital and the surrounding streets.

I became friends with the families of the wounded Israeli soldiers, one
in particular, Rina, whose only child was wounded in his eyes. One day,
I was visiting with her and the Israeli army band came to play national
songs to lift the spirits of the wounded soldiers. As they surrounded
his bed playing a song about Jerusalem, Rina and I started crying. I
felt out of place and started walking out of the room, and this mother
held my hand and pulled me back in without even looking at me. She held
me, crying, and said, "It is not your fault." We just stood there,
crying, holding each other's hands.

What a contrast between her-a mother looking at her deformed,
19-year-old only child and still able to love me, the enemy-and a Muslim
mother who sends her son to blow himself up to smithereens just to kill
a few Jews or Christians.

The difference between the Arabic world and Israel is a difference in
values and character. It's barbarism versus civilization. It's democracy
versus dictatorship. It's goodness versus evil.

Once upon a time, there was a special place in the lowest depths of hell
for anyone who would intentionally murder a child. Now, the intentional
murder of Israeli children is legitimized as Palestinian "armed
struggle." However, once such behavior is legitimized against Israel, it
is legitimized everywhere in the world, constrained by nothing more than
the subjective belief of people who would wrap themselves in dynamite
and nails for the purpose of killing children in the name of god.

Because the Palestinians have been encouraged to believe that murdering
innocent Israeli civilians is a legitimate tactic for advancing their
cause, the whole world now suffers from a plague of terrorism, from
Nairobi to New York, from Moscow to Madrid, from Bali to Beslan.

They blame suicide bombings on the "desperation of occupation." Let me
tell you the truth. The first major terror bombing committed by Arabs
against the Jewish state occurred 10 weeks before Israel even became
independent. On Sunday morning, February 22, 1948, in anticipation of
Israel 's independence, a triple truck bomb was detonated by Arab
terrorists on Ben Yehuda Street in what was then the Jewish section of
Jerusalem. Fifty-four people were killed and hundreds were wounded.

Thus, it is obvious that Arab terrorism is caused not by "desperation"
or "occupation", but by the VERY THOUGHT of a Jewish state.

So many times in history in the last 100 years, citizens have stood by
and done nothing, allowing evil to prevail. As America stood up against
and defeated communism, now it is time to stand up against the terror of
religious bigotry and intolerance. It's time for everyone to stand up
and support and defend the State of Israel, which is the front line of
the war against terrorism.

Thank you."

Lebanon is a democratic country. I don't think it matters what religion or cultual background you are from. The attacks are obvious violations of human rights, they're also weakly justifying attacks especially the most unjustifiable of them all, an attack in Qana.

That girls Brigitte has a right to believe what she wants too, I've met a person or two equally stupid. (All religions and races have people which are mentally defficient.

Can anyone explain why Hezbollah who are portrayed as evil have killed 150ish people mostly soldiers but Israel have killed 1005+ who are mostly civilians?

Are Israel really the evil ones?

how sad.....

ps its ALL israels fault ...not lebanons

Perhaps if the Lebanese took control of the happenings within their own country, and the presence of militant groups we would not be seeing the trouble there is at the moment? It's ludicrous to place 100% of the blame on Israel. It's their soverign right to protect their own interests, and I should hope that if Australia were being terrorised by some militant group we too would act.

FIrstly Lebanon were attempting to take control of the happening in their own country. Remember it was Israel actions that created the HEzbollah rocket fire. Israel attacked Palestine and trespassed into Lebanese territory militarily.

IF Australia was being terrorised - i am sure we would have taken a more appropriate actions - i doubt we would blown a country to bits.

But why would Lebanon want to disarm/disband Hezbollah anyway? They've protected Lebanon against Israeli occupation for so long, they provide social services, etc. It's not like they're sneaking around terrorizing Lebanon anyway (according to the US/Israel )... they hold seats in parliament for crying out loud.

John Howard is right in demanding that Hizbollah must be disarmed. Thats the only way there will be lasting peace between the two countries.

I am celebrating Israeli Victory against terrorist :D
