UniLodge is virtually cut-off from the rest of the residential hall/college community. I mean, it doesn't have a residents' committee, so how are we meant to get included in things like interhall ball or IB or anything that's going on outside of itself?

John's manages to get involved with other hall activities, even though it's affiliated with the ANU, so why can't UniLodge? 'Cause without that kind of inter-hall interaction, it would feel very much like you were living in a business, and not in a college. Certainly not a very personable experience. :(

UniLodge fails to get involved for a few reasons
a) Unilodge Administrators operate the place like a hotel - Provided you pay your money and don't break the rules, they won't disturb you. It's a run-for-profit hotel.
b) The RA flopped - was created last year, but didn't work. Fom what i understand RA was able to organise a team (who merged with toad) to play johns at soccor and thats about it. Also SR's were employed, but seemed to be like the Gestapo, enforcing UL rules.
c) Very closed community, everyone is behind locked doors and there is no big emphasis to socialise.
d) Has a very high international rate and generally internationals are less enthuastic for sporting/social events (im generalising here, so nobody rip into me for being "racist")

Fair comment current anu-ers?
Who knows, maybe they will change this year.

EDIT - i cant get HTML links to work :(

You told me I'd be better off self-catered (I agree) and that UL was the best it's new it's colorful etc etc etc.
What were the other self-catered houses? I can't remember the names and I can't access the ANU site either. Sucks.
If you could do me a huge favour and post their rates/facilities/etc, I'd really appreciate it :)

Just a single studio (maybe twin, but not single beds) but I really desperately want an ensuite. Sharing the bathroom is... I can't even begin to imagine. It's like camp all over again >.<

What's the Bruce Packard Wing?

What's the use of Residents Committee? I mean, what's the purpose? What do we get out of it? And why does the rate vary?? Is it paid yearly or what?

Also, I had a more important question.
I'm sure it's been asked before, but..

If I defer, do I miss out on accomm? When do you apply for accommodation? The year you apply for your degree or when you will actually begin to attend? I hope that makes sense.

I wasn't going to start until 2011 but I've changed my mind. I want to start in 2010 (take just a year off) and I want accomm. but I'm more concerned about getting cut off from the course I want than accom.

They organise events - keep a social life etc. Make sure you go out and meet new people etc, especially important on O-week

You get organised social events, and from memory you dont have a choice in paying the RA fee. It's paid yearly, and the rates would depend between colleges on how much "spending" they expect to do.

unsure sorry, you may have to call them about that.

BRUCE HALL - Packard Wing

The new Packard wing at Bruce Hall provides studios with individual kitchens and bathrooms for postgraduate and later year undergraduate students.

The Packard wing was named in honour of Bill Packard OAM, the founding Warden of Bruce Hall (1961-1986). Bill was instrumental in shaping the Hall's culture, developed Inward Bound, the ANU's premier inter-Hall event and continues to support the Hall's activities to this day.

Bruce Hall provides 66 single rooms and 12 double rooms for couples in the Packard wing. Each room has either a single or double bed, wardrobe, desk, chair, fridge, kitchenette and bathroom facilities. The rooms are centrally heated and carpeted. Floor plan for single room

The Packard Wing offers a 40-week contract at $198 per week for single rooms and $283 per week for double rooms.

Rooms in the Packard wing are self-catered and cooking facilities (sink, microwave, benchtop oven/hot plate and bar fridge) are provided in room.

Your rent includes electricity, heating and water charges.

Each room has a phone with Voicemail. Residents can make internal hall and on campus calls at no charge. Local, STD and international calls are charged at competitive rates negotiated by the University.

All rooms have internet connections. We also have a Computer Lab that contains PC’s and Macintoshes. The Hall also has an extensive intranet, administered by residents.

Union Court, lecture halls and shops are just a few minutes walk away. Canberra’s cbd is also within walking distance and buses depart regularly from outside the hall to all major shopping centres.

Bruce Hall provides a comprehensive support network, including the Head, Dean of Residents, Sub-Deans and Senior Residents. Tutorial rooms are also available.

Bruce Hall provides facilities for music practice and also for performance of music. There are several piano’s and soundproofed music rooms. We also have an art studio and dark room.

The Hall has laundry and dryer rooms, these are available to all students and the cost is included in the weekly tariff. Residents need to provide their own laundry detergent

A University parking permit must be purchased before you are issued with a Resident parking permit which will allow you to park in Bruce Hall designated areas. Canberra's network of bike paths and public transport is quite good, so we encourage residents to save money and not bring a car.

Residents are responsible for cleaning their own rooms, vacuum cleaners may be borrowed from the Senior Resident or Housekeeping. Bruce Hall has regular room inspections for Packard Wing.

Bruce Hall Homepage

Smoking is prohibited in all University buildings . Designated smoking areas are located outside and away from all buildings.

There are a small number of rooms available for students with physical disabilities. Please contact the Hall to discuss your needs.

To me, the most impressive aspect of life in Bruce Hall is the initiative and responsibility students take for promoting vigour and quality of community life and the care they exercise for each other.

"later year undergraduates".. it's useless.

The only houses with 52 week contracts are the Graduate House (useless), University House, and UL.
I'm doomed to UL :(

EDIT: Packard has some nice music facilities. Do they have dance studios and drama stages, etc? The artistic stuff... (in any other self-catered houses)

Yeah this is one of my main concerns about UL. Like Evilo said, this year may be a little different due to the accom. situation, so we can only hope. I was really looking forward to getting involved in the arts events. I suppose we'll have to make more of an effort to get involved in club and society activities.

Umm. Seriously?
Is that, like, meant to cure you or something? Lmfao. People have to be inticed to care about their health. Omg. How funny.

nah the bottle of water is supposed to help you be able to pee into the medical container to be tested. I think its just a spin on words to attract people to be tested. ;) at least the chlamdydia people have a sense of humour :p

yeah unilodge is pretty deserted. went there on friday and saturday nights and i saw nobody... and all i heard was the sterile hum of the air-conditioner.

almost expected some little indian nerd to go up to me and go "I AM SOOO WASTED" while holding a mocktail in his hand.

That'd be fine, except we'd still be missing out. You know the event that's like Valeté, (it's on earlier in the year, too) that usually starts out with Bruce first then works its way down Daley Road? Things like that. Things that you get all dressed up for.

To those at B&G who are going out on 'classy night' during O-week, I envy you. Unless of course, you plan to invite me. Then I can make other arrangements. ;) :p

I thought you were going to say with a pizza delivery lol.
Your version's funnier than my imagination/whatever lol :)

Seems like UL people is pretty much all international students who don't want to be involved with anybody. Great. I bet they have their own library too. 3 stories or something crazy.

Speaking of libraries, do they have TIME magazine? They better. I can't live without it. And do they have Skynews channel? I hope so lol. They have Foxtel, so....
