i have this assignment and im having a major blank and i do not know where to start =[ its a question, if someone can dull it down for me and just tell me straight what it is that would be a MAJOR HELP!

question:

The historical nature of gender roles and the status of men and woman in Japan in traditional society.

Well i think they just want u to research into Japan's history and find out what gender roles and gender status was like back then.

Gender roles as in: what roles did men and women have? who went to work, who was the breadwinner, who had the power, who looked after the kids?

Status ties in closly with gender roles, like did japenese society have a hierarchial structure? where were men and women on that structure? were women in high positions of authority? did they have the oppurtunity to be?

Get definitions for the main concepts: status, gender, power, authority to clarify things a bit. Go to the library and get books on the history of Japan etc...........i hope this helps and this IS what the question is asking you to do. Try asking your teacher about it, they'll be glad to help trust me!!

Status – standing allocated by society, may be allocated differently depending upon the criteria applied. Eg. A person may have a high status in the area of sport but that person’s status in terms of education may be much lower.
