Let's say I've been ranked consistenly as top 5 for english adv for all of my assessments, and for trials i was ranked say 20 ... what would my final rank be appoximately?

Depends on your final course mark relative to others after it's all been put together by your school.

oh man, i swear, all my hard work down the drain because of trials and my failure to lodge an illness and misadventure

Probably ~8-9 in most cases but the mark matters a lot.

We can't give definite because it depends how others went.

At my school, Eng trials are 30%, how far was your rank 20 score in trial away from 1st?

But you'll probably still be able to maintain top 10 (rank 8,9 or 10).
