hi guys...

i need your help...i have an essay dues this friday! the question is-

'Why do modern directors need to update Shakespeare's King Lear'
discuss this statement with reference to:
- reception in a range of contexts
- textual integrity
- language
- your own interpretation
Refer closely to TWO scenes in your response.

if you have any ideas can you please help...i have to have it finished!

why?? think about it... how does the context of jacobean english relate to our society?
key word is update...
why do you think anything is updated? because times change, thing and people and thoughts about life and society change.
An easier example (i know we have to write for king lear) is 10 things i hate about you/the taming of the shrew. In this case it has been interpreted and "updated" to make it relevant to it's intended audience - teeny boppers. Baz Luhrman's romeo and juliet... etc.
i think if you look at the ways and reasons other shakespeare plays have been changed this question might make abit more sence to you.

we update things to keep them relevant in todays society

reception in a range of contexts:
look at the contexts (place/time/era and subsequent society etc) of two interpretations you've seen and think about why they were used.
