well if you want a laptop for gaming (and why would you?), then Centrino may not be the best option...... go for a laptop with a pentium 4 precessor.....

in your price range, you should be able to get:

1.5GHz Centrino or 2.8GHz Pentium
512M RAM
CD-RW/DVD Combo Drive
40G HDD
Integrated 32MB video card
Integrated sound card
15" SXGA TFT Screen or 15.4" WXGA (Widescreen)
Inbuilt speakers, modem, wireless LAN
Windows XP + other software

etc etc etc....

hey guys, this is sorta kinda related.
i might be looking at getting a laptop, but i would only really use it for basic office programs (word/excel) to do my uni work on and surf the web....just uni stuff really
:. it doesnt have to be uber-fast or anything like that
so i was thinking about getting a 2nd hand one
what do you guys think of them? also, are they reliable and what are some reputable places to get them, and roughly what could i be looking at paying?

For use of word/excel, you'd only even need like 500MHz...

Heck, even a 133MHz will run it..

I dont think you should get a laptop for gaming purposes, especially with the standard pentium process because the battery life is shoddy( like 2 hours compared to 4 or 5 with pentium m) and you might have over heating issues. Ideally, just buy a decent laptop which you do your work on and have wireless and get a beasty home pc for gaming!

if u want a laptop that can do everything get the centrino one since they are very fast, (yes fast enough for games), they will last longer as its newer then P4 and they will give u a higher re-sale value if u ever wish to get rid of it.

Like i have a HP NC8000 laptop which is a centrino 'business line' which means it has 3 years warranty and comes with that corporate norton antivirus which u never need to pay to update, ever. As for games it plays all the current games and gets almost 10 000 3d marks 2001SE. Not bad for a laptop that also gives u 4h battery time and if u get any centrino it should give u >3h battery time and if games is what u also want make sure it has a video card and NOT 'integrated graphics'.

So yeh get something with good warranty and dont even think about the p4 laptop since those are just big bulky battery eating machines.
