Re: How much does having a laptop help me at uni?

If you are doing any computer subjects I would recommend it. A lot of people were typing up code during lectures last semester. But I agree with others that often people are just playing games like quake or watching anime. Especially if the lecturer is boring or it is easier to print of lecture notes than use a laptop. Anyway that didn't stop me buying a thinkpad T61 yesterday for uni.

I improved my productivity by three folds.

I used MS OneNote to sort all my lecture notes and tutorial discussions. I type faster than i can write, so it does help a lot.

Laptops and Uni

Is there any point in bringing a laptop with me to uni (like, the uni grounds)? Are there any benefits to using my own laptop compared to using the university computers? Or should i just keep my laptop at my residence?

Re: Laptops and Uni

Apparently it's pretty distracting bringing a laptop into lectures, as you'll most probably find yourself playing games and what not. On the flipside, I guess it'd be convenient as opposed to using university computers, as you won't have to wait for a computer to be free, from what I've heard, as there are times when the demand for uni computers can be quite high. But anyway, that's what I've gathered from other posts that have addressed your type of query.

How about an Asus Eeepc? That way there is absolutely no temptation for games since none run on it. Small and light too...

Never having to wait for a uni comp is pretty nice, and if your laptop is light it won't be much of a hassle.

Re: Laptops and Uni

I wish i had a laptop while i was at uni, coz then you dont have to line up for ages for a free computer, especailly at peak times.

I went to Qut, and they reckon that the Gardens Point library lab is one of the biggest in the country, and you go there at peak times and its like oh yeah sure and im (whatever you want to saylol).

Most uni's would have laptop points so you could get connected to the networks, but then sometimes you have to fight with the Asians to get a desk where you can plug in your laptop or get wireless and work in a wireless zone. So annoying how the asians take up heaps of computer room!!!

Definatley dont take them to lectures! Its so annoying and you look geeky and like wil get rejeted coz pple think your a nerd or a show off. Plus its annoying hearning pple typing away instead of writing....Plus most of the lecturers will think that you are playing games and not listening. Ive seen some just with earphones in, not listeningat all...they shouldve jsut stayed home.

One lecturer told us a story at the start of the year about laptops and how one guy was looking at porn or was on msn or somethingand suddenly yelled out and everyone just went silent and stared at him and the lecturer paid him out for hte rest of the semester.

AND you have to worry about security of them..Those cables only work if you have a heavy table lol.

Re: Laptops and Uni

After today's discovery that the desks at Newcastle Uni are Super-High-Tech, being both collapsible and compact, I don't think taking a laptop into lectures is such a brilliant idea. At least not until they iron out the kinks in the extremely unique and advanced folding away system which, at regular intervals, decides to fold away while your stuff is still on it. Eh...

Oh yeah, HI JESS!!!

Re: Laptops and Uni

even if you have a laptop, u still need to fight with the other students for a computer, unless you can somehow get access to the required statistics software or maths software required for the maths/computer assignments.

but usually they are never for free, so u basically have no choice other than to goto the computer labs anyways.

i never had problems accessing the computer labs after 5pm anyway.

u will notice the person who is using the laptop in lectures, is always sitting by him/herself. i wonder why LOL

What's the internet limit for students (without paying) in Sydney?

There are 2 ways to solve that problem
a) illegally download (not saying you should because that would be illegal)
b) Use software like cygwin.

You can get cable tie things that wrap around table legs to stop people stealing them, but it obviously doesn't wokr on all tables.
Kensington laptop locks
I've got 2, they work great. But pov students will steal your mouse if you take too long. Its better just to go to the bathroom before you sit down to study, and take your laptop with you when you leave.

meh usually the software they use are retarded and no one bothers to even share coz no one uses them in real life anyway.

At the access labs or on the wireless network, you get 6MB free per day, which accumulates up to a limit of 42MB (ish).
