i'm giving myself fri-tue to cover the entire course. should be managable. i like to learn thoroughly (because skimming over stuff just wont sink in). so going thru lecture notes, then text, then making notes, then tutes. i think you gotta cover the tutes well.

btw, do you know the details of the final exam? i got my lecture tmw, but i'm curious :)

Can't believe she used expected value to try and justify her negative marking, and saying there's no penalty o_0

thats what my tutor said.

actually on second thoughts, he is a massive lost case. so he may be talking about the class average.

book value v market value

market value = value that a buyer in the market is willing to give up
book value = in your accounts. it is the value of your asset by taking into account depreciation (and i guess any asset revaluation).

i can think of using this when you calculate the taxable income.

selling price < book vale (depreciated value)
the reason why your book value is less is because you havent depreciated your asset enough. hence havent received the tax benefit by this in previous years. so you should receive the benefit. therefore, it will decrease your taxable income, hence you see it as a loss.

sp > bv
this means you have depreciated it too much, hence received tax benefits from when you shouldnt. so this sale will increase your taxable income. so it is a gain from sale.

just a couple of pointers, this is only for calculation of taxable income, not the actual cashflow. you need to calculate how much tax you will receive/pay (THAT is the cashflow) you may need to repeat some of these figures as they can be cashflows - salvage value, savings.

also, this is how i see them. i am not 100% sure.

another question:

what is the shareholders response to dividend policy in
i)pefect markets
ii)real world

have a go and then we'll compare

i think:
i) they will be indifferent because on the dividend question; to pay or not to pay..that is the question :p
pay- the shareholders will receive $, hence shareholder equity increases.
not pay- the retained earnings will be reinvested int the firm -> growth -> share price increases, hence shareholder wealth increases.
so in a perfect market with shareholders can be indifferent.

ii) in a real world, you may have long/short term investors who want income now/later depending on their preference.

lets try to make this work with the spoilers (spoiler) (/spoiler), using [] instead of (),

another question:

what are the cml and sml lines?

redrum your fucken sig got me mesmerised...damn man get that shit off

boink... your gay, seriously you say your screwed but you come out with a HD...

im trying to do the tute questions since i didnt do them during the tutes, and shit their hard... i rearranged all the chapters from lowest to highest... i cant chapter 8,10,11 (havnt gone beyond)... 10/11 has too many formulas... and chapter 8 i have no idea how to calculate them...

as for your dividend policy... in a perfect world, it doesnt matter since you can make your own home made divedends... but because in teh real world with brokerage cost and taxes etc... it mightnt work unless the company has the reinvestment scheme

in the real world, it matters to investors, as you said. they might be able to take advantage of the whole imputated system... but at the same time it said somewhere its a psychological thing... investors split share price and dividend into two catergories..

not sure if i even answrered your question...

CML and SML dont really make sense... its something about investing on those lines to get the most efficient portfolio...
