i caught up with the rest of the world and saw 'crash' last night
i expected to be enjoy it somewhat, given the rock bottom expectations i had

but i seriously disliked it

Saw Mission Impossible 3 with gf last Thursday. Pretty good as action blockbusters go. Hoffman made the difference I think.

Saw The Searchers in film class yesterday. Exceptionally dull. John Ford insists on making every shot a vehicle for Maiden Marion's rugged manliness, which stopped being funny for me pretty quickly.

Saw the 33' King Kong in film class today. Maybe it was a mistake to watch the remake first, because I just couldn't take any of it seriously. The one word to describe it all, in its entirety, would be 'clunky'. Clunky script, clunky acting, and although it's to be expected, oh so clunky monsters. Kudos to Peter Jackson for improving on the original in every possible aspect.

crime fiction was great. i wrote a mean big sleep parody. wish i could find it.

watched chantal akerman's les rendezvous d'anna last night; really interesting. not so much a narrative film as an orchestra of static, symmetrical (often almost mirrored) images and fluid tracking shots with a vague story, that conveys one woman's alienation and dislocation. had me transfixed from the opening shot to the end, which it saying something for a film so glacially paced and with so little plot (and at two hours). I can really see the influence on a number of filmmakers; todd haynes, michael haneke, gus van sant's recent avant-garde stuff... although she seems fairly influenced by kubrick and antonioni herself. still, utterly unique, and i wanna see more from her.

Love Actually. *sigh* its the best movie. i love the part where the guy makes those cute signs for Keira Knightley. "to me, you are perfect, and my wasted heart will love you til you look like this" *shows pic of grotesqely old corpse*. its so sweet. but she's with his best friend.

The New World.

I thought it really terrific, and can't understand the negative press and how it's so disappointing for a Malick (especially given how mediocre The Thin Red Line is). Not Badlands nor Days of Heaven, but still incredibly impressive.
