People are surprised this list included more than just child porn?

It was obvious they were always going to include all porn, there's well established precedents in video and book legislation.

Gambling is necessary to secure Xenophon's vote.
Xenophon has already officially come out against it, regardless of how many gambling sites they include.

My favourite from the list: files.kavefish.com/pictures/collections/funny_cat_pictures/_index-list.html

It's just funny cat pictures and nothing suggets there's ever been anything else.

Also, the list (although a month older than one on Wikileaks) can be obtained from Integard filter software. Hex edit the integard.exe and change first occurence of "datetimepicker.js" to websites_ACMA.txt, then login to integard's webUI and request that file. Apparently there's a whitelist of files the webUI server can give to the user. I've confirmed myself that the lolcats URL is indeed in that ACMA file from the filter software...
lol.

THE Federal Government's proposed internet censorship regime is not the silver bullet to stop child pornography, Communications Minister Stephen Conroy said.

A blacklist of more the 2000 websites, including child pornography sites, banned by the Australian Communications and Media Authority (ACMA), was published on the whistleblower website Wikileaks over a week ago.

Critics said the leak showed the Government should step back from mandatory filtering and that the plan would not solve the problem of child pornography, which is often spread over peer-to-peer networks rather than the web.

Senator Conroy said the Government had never claimed the filter itself would stop child pornography.

"We've never tried to pretend that this was a silver bullet, we've never tried to suggest this was the sole solution,'' Senator Conroy said.

The aim of the proposed filtering is to block material that is already illegal and is refused classification, he said.

Senator Conroy said other forms of technology could be used to crack peer-to-peer pedophile rings.

"If I stood up anywhere and said 'hey, this filter will block peer-to-peer' then rightfully I should be ridiculed,'' he said.

"I've never said that ... it is not designed to deal with peer-to-peer.''

Speculation about the Government's plans to block political content was also incorrect, he said.

"I don't want to block political content, (I've) never said we were going to block political content.''

Senator Conroy said he had been accused of introducing censorship.

"This is patently nonsense; if you read what is actually in out policy (which) we took to the election, if you listen to what people claim we've said we're going to do, the gulf could not be wider.''

I'm shit scared to check out that list in case I stumble upon some child porn website and become haunted for life or have police come knocking on my door. There were some .jpg sites already there which I was too scared to even check what was on it!

I've seen child porn on 4chan before, it's not that big of a deal. Haunted for life? You just keep scrolling or close the window.

Or until you got banned for posting it.

Political suicide by Conroy.
Yeah i saw this on QandA, it was a pretty good debate and all i all i think he got owned, but there was some good points raised.

Him: we need to block websites that are refused classification, this is stuff promoting child porn, stuff promoting incest, stuff promoting suicide or anorexia"

hold on a sec, he doesnt want to just block images and videos of cp etc, but wants to block sites that even talk about it? he wants to block sites that are pro suicide or pro anorexia? holy fucking shit, what a censor clusterfuck, he wants to block any sort of discussion about anything his political party deems wrong....okayy. The douchebag even blocked an anti-abortion site...fucking dipshit, how does he not understand thats a political move?

some chick: our freedom of speech should be absolute, if paedophiles want to support child porn then allow them to bring their claims into the public sphere so i can debate them

gw some chick, you are perfectly right, our freedom of speech is non-negotiable, its the right to speak about stuff that really disgusts you which is where our rights are tested, nobody is ever going to say you cant talk about something uncontroversial like...i dunno, how you believe all humans have a right to a fair trial. I might not support things people say, but i would die to protect their right to say it.

some douchebag: i think sometimes freedom of speech should be curtailed to prevent dangerous elements of the community blah blah the paedophile problem.

umm wtf, you think because you dont like something that someone shouldn't be able to talk about it? to discuss it in their public sphere? and they should be censored? ok gw there asshat.

Senator Conroy needs to be politically crucified. Otherwise he would have gone down as the first guy to bring in political internet censorship for a western country. After hearing his debate I know that our ideals are irreconcilable and i would NEVER vote for him and in fact my faith in the Labor party over this has been very deeply shaken, and i regret voting them in.

heres the episode of QandA Q and A live from Melbourne | Q&A | ABC TV

yes insight is getting into better stuff now, notice how he dodged questions about say, games rated MA and above being banned on the net, movies showing spanking lol.

Conroy is handling himself well, but that guy with the fucked up hair and the glasses guy are totally demolishing him simply by having better data and being in a superior position.

SBS Insight
I'm actually thinking of switching to Internode because of that guy. If I was closer to the exchange then it would be a no contest but telstra cable extreme is so fucking quick compared to possible adsl2+ alternatives for me.

It's not going to pass the Senate because they need the support of either the Coalition, OR all of the minor parties. The Coalition won't support it, and the Greens have indicated they won't, hence it fails. The only way I can see it passing is if there is an amendment that says "This is an opt-in system" or something to that effect.
