whopps i made that unclear...
i was trying to say, the lower the average mark of the test, the higher the scaling?
so if like many ppl got band 4ish, it gets scaled up coz its "too hard"... im hoping here =p

well basically the reason that courses get scaled high or low is the "smartness" of the ppl who do it.

basically, youre UAI is a rank that you would come (theoretically) if EVERYONE did EVERY subject that is available. thus, to maximise your UAI, you should do subjects that you perform best @.

e.g. maths ext2 is scaled really high because the canditure are really smart

basically, dont complain that the scaling of SDD is crap, its because either we're all relatively crap in general, or there's heaps of crap ppl down there draggin us down. (sorry, no offence for anyone).

but scaling is still a relatively minor thing that you shouldnt really worry much about. its just the slight fiddling and tweaking of the marks that wont really affect it too much. you should do subjects that you find most enjoyable. thats the most important factor. scaling is just lik the icing on the cake. dont spend so much time stressing over the icing when you havent even finished baking the cake.

My mark would have scaled in the downwards direction last year (i suspect)... It was still counted though... What do you think Skywalker? I dont think that our marks could have scaled up at all for UAI calcs though...

But back to the topic: complaining is useless. Try encouraging the bludgers to drop SDD.

Sorry Fos I'm not sure if we're discussing aligning or scaling here. Xeriphic's post didn't quite make sense.

If xeriphic is referring to aligning, then the marks went up. I'm pretty sure I didn't get 96 raw in the HSC. And if I recall correctly, the raw marks for the person who topped the state in 2002 were nowhere near 90-something.

If we're talking about scaling, then, relative to other subjects, SDD is rather poorly scaled (nothing to do with it going up or down) despite its difficulty.

Skywalker: scaling I think... I dunno about all this board jargon... I think for the purposes of calculating a UAI i mean, that a 95 wouldnt be counted as 95... is that what i mean?

I think if the students had better idea of what SDD was about before choosing it, less of the "not so smart" students would be doing it. From my experience in SDD, there are 3 type of students that do the subject. The smart ones (genuinly interested in computing and programming), the stupid ones (chose the subject becuase it involves computers which means internet and games) and there are those that had no idea of its difficulty or what it involves but will always try their best in it. Usually they are good in their other subjects (but they will probably end up dropping it at the end of yr 11 instead of thinking of it as a "bludge subject that wont count anyway"). lol so we need better subject education for the year 10's before starting yr 11. :p

What my school does to solve that problem is to scare them on the first day by showing them stuff which we dont even come close to doing in difficulty. This usually results in 1-2 people dropping almost instantly...sometimes on the same day. But this year my class, although not super intelligent, went fairly decent with an average in about the 70s which is pretty good considering our average in school assesments was about 30.

Incorrect. Standard English is scaled the EXACTLY same as Advanced English is, and it has worse scaling than SDD. Still, the scaling of both English AND SDD is about average.

thats because SDD is easy if you know your shit, and more and more kids are knowing their shit about computers inside out
when i was in year 7 in 2000 there was about 2-3 gamers, now the year 7's has about 30-40 players, i went past my old high school and saw ROOMS of these players
WTF!

thats why we got this random girl coming first in SDD not one of hte programming nerds, they're getting 2nd, 3rd and im getting 5th (out of 40)

good on her for putting her head down and beating us

this is also proven because for example this guy who kills evryone in tests got like 20/40 for the programing assignment, and i got 31/40, the test he got 80% i got 76% ;)

and unforutnatley the major project has very little say on your UAI, mainly the tests do :(

Oh no way, the current year 7s are idiots, when i went there they asked me to fix their comps, most had porn spyware everywhere they had no idea but the year 9s had a basic idea what too fix

I was asked too teach a whole class how too remove spyware, it was a year 9 class and it was a group of 15 (teacher was watching me) and about 13 of them got lost the simple steps of download, run and sit back :(

You forget this subject is Software Design and Development, with the emphasis on the "Design", not the "Development"

SDD is akin to Software Engineering, where the focus is on project management and good program design.
