Hey guys I'm having a bit of a dilemma. I was hoping to get to UNSW commerce, and I also want to do Law, as I am interested in criminal and international crime. Thus, I would like to do a combined law/commerce degree, but I believe I am limited to getting a 85-90 atar, after getting my trials results back. This wont get me into law/comm obviously, so I would like to get advice on what to do. Should I:
-Go to UNSW and do an 'easy' course, get 80 wam and transfer to comm/law
-Go to ANU, do comm as it is only 82, then transfer to comm/law the next year
-Go to ANU, do comm, then transfer to either Comm at UNSW, or comm/law at UNSW (which i heard external transfer to law is basically impossible, so i've already ruled that out anyway)
- Go, and do UTS business, transfer to UTS law/business, or try and transfer to UNSW comm
I really don't want to go to UTS (no offence), because the prestige factor limits my chances of getting into the really good firms, and i have this hope of trying to get into IB, or a top law firm as does everyone else haha. ANU has a great rep, however it's not as good as UNSW in commerce, but it is better for law. I don;t care about moving to Canberra also. How hard is it to transfer internally to law at ANU and UNSW? What are the WAM requirements for ANU? Also I heard that if you go to ANU, you will have to do a job in the government, is this true? Being in the top 8, it is easier to transfer, and i won't waste a year.
So yea please help me i don't know what to do

I guess people who go to ANU might end up working for the government/Canberra purely because geographically, they are already living in Canberra and it would be easy for the government to recruit/promote graduate programs to people already living in that area. I mean, you'd have a tougher time convincing somebody living in Brisbane to move to Canberra than somebody who is already living there :p

I would suggest you do ANU Comm for the time being.

Ultimately, you're starting a degree which you have an interest in doing and this also lends you the option to credit units you've already completed. If you want to transfer to UNSW Comm, that would still be a choice you can make while you continue to complete your Comm degree.

What would you do if you couldn't get a WAM of 80 in a UNSW degree? What then?

Also, in the 6 years I've been on BoS, I've never heard anyone say that doing a degree at ANU will require you to work for the government. You've probably misunderstood some things you've read.

You could always just do UTS Business for the first year/semester and try to transfer through to UNSW Commerce. At the very least, you'd get a general idea of some of the core business/commerce subjects so you can be a bit more prepared for the Commerce degree. And from experience, the exams aren't too difficult and the teaching is quite well done, so doing well in the UTS Business degree is very easily achievable, thus giving you a good chance of transferring imo. But going through UAC might be a bit of a hassle all over again.

But in UNSW, they only take my wam right? So even if i got 80's, I would have an equal chance with someone who got a 98 and couldn't get law. My friends tell me that external transfers to UNSW law is exteremly hard, almost impossible. Especially if i get an atar only between 85-90. I would go to UTS, however UNSW and other go8 uni's don't recognise the subjects, thus I would have to repeat the year again....
I would have a better chance with internal transfer to comm/law or atleast comm, because I think it's 75 wam to get into commerce and they guarantee 100 places for internal transfers. I'm worried if I don't get the 75-80 wam.

someone went full retard telling you ANU requires you to do gov work. Only uni that requires you to do contract/commitment is ADFA for defence and that's about it. getting an 80+ wam at UNSW isn't exactly easy and there are no "easy" courses. There are only courses that YOU would do well in.

Go UTS,as I posted before one of my family friends got into a Big 6 law firm through UTS law, sure UTS might reduce your chances, but if you go ANU its going to be harder for you to participate in some extra-circular+ internships.Say you don't get the WAM and aren't able to transfer..a B.comm at ANU is the same story, less internships,extra-circular and friends (lol), UTS you can always go Big 4 and hope for a transfer into IB or something.(well same with ANU, but then you could've just had an easier time at UTS).

There are offices in Canberra + could argue less competition.

wait so if I get a band 5 in English advanced I get 5 bonus points 0.o?
I thought IB's only take kids from the top 8, and I am still interested in law, and the law firms are bias also.
I'm pretty sure ANU still has alot of extra-curriculars....

You still need to be getting Distinction minimum usually, just going to a g8 uni won't get you anywhere if your marks are bad.

well, obviously and in Canberra they still do have accounting/law firms and banks
Sydney and melbourne are the financial centers of Australia. Canberra is only if you want to work government. I'd go ANU law if you are able to get in based on your marks or just do commerce in usyd/unsw.

Well an accounting firm is better than doing something that doesn't relate with commerce, something to put on your resume.
Commerce at unsw/usyd are too high unfortunately, but comm at ANU is only 82, and its law is 91 as I get 5 bonus points.....
So even if I didn't get law, wouldn't it be easier to transfer to ANU law as the atar is way lower than UNSW, USYD....

You could obviously get internships at Canberra right? They have banks, and law firms just like any other city

They have banks and small offices but no internship opportunities. That's like asking if there's gov internships in sydney coz they have offices.

Just go ANU law since the ATAR is so low you might as well or ANU commerce. ANU is a great uni it's just lack of business infrastructure but you can do a lot of gov work while you're there and it does help on resumes.
