What does it mean when it says turns red litmus blue or blue litmus red?

Blue litmus turns red in acid but stays blue in an alkaline
Red litmus turns blue in alkaline and stays red in acids

Just for extra information, pH range of litmus is from 4.5 to 8.3 and changes from red to blue.
