So my grade chose our subjects for next year and handed in our forms last week. So today the head teacher of english came around to every classroom and said that the students who had a combined score of <30 for the first two assessments of the year couldnt do advance english (even students in the top classes). Well i was on the borderline 29/30 and she said that if i got at least 15/20 for my next overcoming adversity test, shell let me do advance english, otherwise shell send a letter home saying that she is strongly suggesting i do standard english.

This is putting a lot of pressure on me because this upcoming test determines whether i can do adv... ONE TEST :( didnt look at how i did overall! Or my current mark (i got 92 despite the fact that i was under for advance english "requirements"). Shes only doing this because she doesnt want to start a third class for advance english, as previous year year 10s didnt have to deal with this kind of stuff. Can i do something about it?! Because my subjects were all perfect for what im aiming for
Ext 1 maths
Chem
Physics
Economics
Adv englush
Ext 1 eng

But now i have to change ext 1 and adv if i dont get at least a high b on this test :( can the teachers really do that?! Help!

Sometimes teachers have their reasons for doing things, and often it's not about wanting more students doing higher levels of a subject so much as preventing the students from undertaking something they will struggle with. 15/20 is only 80%, it's not that difficult to achieve in an across-the-form style assessment for a prospective advanced English student. Besides, if you get below 80% the head teacher is simply proposing advising you not to do it, not holding a gun to your back as you hand in your subject selection. If you are forced into standard (which I doubt would happen unless it was going to be really detrimental to you to do it, but just if you were) you can always protest against the ruling. If you demonstrated a real desire to do it I doubt they'd refuse you the opportunity to give it a shot, even just for a term.

Anyway, if your current mark is 92% why are you so anxious about not being able to get a B on the upcoming test?

Although tbh, I don't see why you can't do Adv, but if you're a borderline Adv student, then Ext 1 would be way too difficult and I don't see why you're choosing it?

I understand that 75% that isnt hard to achieve but Im afraid that ill blank out during the exam due to the pressure.. As ive said, they wont let students "try it" because that would mean having a third class and apparently they dont want that because it creates too much of an inconvenience

Speaking from my schools perspective, you can do ext 1 if you do advance. The head of english is just being a b**ch and having enough students for 2 classes I.e. 60ish or 55ish people and dropping everyone else to standard. Ive worked hard this year and if I wanted to do standard I wouldve just bludged.

You said yourself that a letter would be sent home "advising" you don't do adv, in the end I'm sure it's your choice but I would listen to what they say

Edit: if you're worried about pressure now wait until real exams ;)

My teacher told me I was borderline as well but she still recommended I do Adv English and English Ext 1. Don't change anything. Just do the best you can in your upcoming assessment. You can do it! :)
