Would you lose marks in the HSC for not completely simplifying, as in being about one step away from the simplified answer ?

Although it is not a direct answer:

Often when you are performing numerical calculations you don't have to simplify you can just give your answer to 2 decimal places unless they specify they want exact answer.

Having a quick look at the 2022 paper, most the calculation quite numerical rather than algebraic. Furthermore most of calculations you will be doing are quite simple though math behind them may be a bit challenging.

To summarise, I don't think you will need to take this approach.

The HSC marker guidelines specify how the markers are to mark, they typically require simplification, but it depends on the question.

If you have a question, lets say find the derivative of

But, the simplified correct answer is:

It is likely that you will not get the final answer mark unless you present the simplified answer.

Regardless, you should always be trying to simplify wherever possible.
