I probably seem extremely naive for asking this question but here goes..Most people on this forum are generally aiming for atars >90 or around that. Why is it that i never ever see anyone receive an atar ~30/40 mark? Family friends of mine recently completed the hsc and got an atar of 52, even though he is quite literally one of the most unintelligent, lazy people i've ever met... i initially thought your atar was a "rank" which scaled you from 1-100 (1 being poor, 100 being incredible), however NO ONE ever seems to get atars <40ish? ideally, someone answering this question would fully explain the system but any help would be appreciated.. just pure curiousity really.ta

ATAR ranks you against your year 7 cohort, so it also takes into account everyone who dropped out in year 10 etc.

Yep, because it includes everyone, the people who dropped out take up most of the lower section. So as you complete year 12, you're guaranteed ~25+

nope.

My friend wasn't even bottom of his school (~32.05).

you say that but:
our cohort grew by ~23,000 from year 7
Did they have to repeat year 12? or what are they doing now?
With a score like that there would be no point repeating school, you'd be fucked.

They just finished and left.
My oldest brother is a 3rd year elec apprentice.
My other brother's gf quit her job to become a mum and now she's doing a TAFE course to do preschool care.
My friend is job hunting. (I think he has a job now)
And my "friend" from my school does nothing because he is unemployable.

Failing school isn't the end of the world.

Firstly, if you are trying to find someone on this forum with a 30-50 ATAR, then I highly doubt they'd be advertising something like this. Secondly, there are over 600 schools in the state, which constitutes to 70,000 students. Chances are that you won't meet someone who has gotten a 30 ATAR.

our cohort grew by ~23,000 from year 7 though, so it didn't benefit us at all.
what factors could make the cohort grow by such a large number?

only thing i could think of would be international students.. doubt that could make up that significant number.

it was 49-50 for our year.

unless you live in GWS

it must've.

My year 7 ELLA and SNAP test say our year 7 cohort was ~52,000 and our year 12 HSC cohort was reported ~73,000 (so only ~20,000 growth)

Also, students in other countries doing the HSC and shit.

yeah so my atar of 98.75, would be around top 1300.
I'm top ~25,740

Lol

(would you be top ~5940? (wait, does that even make sense? (just finished my physics assignment and woke up at 5:30 this morning. I have no brain power left.)))
