how the hell can you write 12 marks worth on this:

The best strength training for children should centre around using their own body weight” Analyse this statement in regard to the appropriateness of resistance training for children. (12 marks)

any advice would be appreciated.
thanks

Hi Sarah,

Cause it's an analyse question start with working out why and why not.

Why is resistance training not recommended for children, what are the physiological reasons, dangers etc. plus you can throw in there effects on motivation as well

When would you use resistance training for children, what precautions would you take and how would you incorporate it. For most children use body weight - how do you do that.

Then remember to show relationships between ideas and draw out implications.

I hope that helps you to start thinking about the question.

Cheers

yeah what withoutwings said is right.

but also it is believed that doing weights at a young age can stunt growth, but there is no direct evidence to suggest this. if they are to do resistence training, very light weights, with high reps. also give examples of lifting thir body weight. eg pushups, crunches, chin ups, pullups, dips. you could also say plyometrics is a form of strength triaining.

also they should do isometric (static) exercises as these are a form of strength training and there is a low risk of injury involved with them.

would it be right to say that it is potentially dangerous because their muscles are not fully developed yet? thats why it could stunt growth. if you were trying to bring up some points on when it is a good idea would you be able to say that if they had a past injury and were doing some strengthening or rehab type resistance?
