Major in Psychology through BSc (Adv) (1 Viewer)

Hi there I was just wondering what units are appropriate to choose if I want to major in psychology. I've been looking through this list but I'm a little confused over what subjects are relevant to what I want to do and which aren't.

Any help is appreciated!

I've asked about this before on info day and some of my friends, but I think in order for you to do 2nd year psych subjects, you need to do PSYCHOLOGY 1A (in sem 1) and PSYCHOLOGY 1B (in sem 2). I'm not sure about any other courses you need to take, it'd be a good idea to call up the unsw students centre for science.

You will be required to study PSYC1001/1002 in order to progress to second year psych subjects. You need to follow the structure/study plan for the course.

Also, it says you should do 12 more junior science electives and 12 other electives - would doing PHYS1001 and PHYS 1005 (Astronomy) be appropriate?

Also, can the other 12 units be ANYTHING (e.g. something not science related like PHIL1011 or Intro to Sociology)?

I would recommend that you do easy subjects. Check our subject reviews - personal opinions. I despised PHIL1011 ~

Just putting it out there that I'm pretty sure you have to also have a major at the advanced level - which isn't available for psychology... but I could be wrong. I'm also doing B Sc (Adv) and I was going to major in psychology as well as pharmacology because you need an advanced major and psych doesn't have advanced senior units.

As rosemcc said, Psychology isn't an advanced major, so you'll have to do another major as well. The trouble with doing psych is that your electives in second and third year are ALL going to be psych ones and there won't be much flexibility.

Requirements for a Psychology Major

To meet the requirements for the major in psychology, you must complete 12 credit points of Junior Psychology units of study, 24 credit points of Intermediate Psychology units of study and at least 24 (30 for BPsych) credit points of Senior Psychology* units of study. The Senior Psychology units of study must include PSYC3018# (Abnormal Psychology). Students who want to be eligible for entry to the Honours program must also include PSYC3010 (Advanced Statistics for Psychology). Do they fit the prerequisites for second year? The physics units I mean because PSYC1001/PSYC1002 is spot on for second year and so on units.

From what I've read, as long as you get a credit or higher in both PHYS1001 and PHYS1003 then you can continue onto advanced levels in second year - which should satisfy my requirements for the advanced science

Awesome! I'm hoping it won't be too difficult compared to physics, which I imagine I will have to work really hard at.

This is absolutely fine! Bioethics is pretty lame though (you're spoon fed information because most people do it as an extra easy subject and so there's not a huge opportunity to expand your thinking), a lot of the other HPSC courses are much better but you have to have already been at uni for a semester before doing them.
