The expected value is just sigma x*p(x)

It is important to know what definitions/theorems are that you can apply and when/how to apply them.

$\begin{align*} \text{For (b),}\ E(X) &= \cfrac{2}{4} \times -4 + \cfrac{2}{4} \times \left(\cfrac{1}{2} \times +10 + \cfrac{1}{2} \times -8\right) \\ &= -2 + \cfrac{1}{2} (+5 + -4) \\ &= -\$1.50 \end{align*}$
