MATH1231 or MATH1241, difference? (1 Viewer)

As the title says what's the actual difference between the two? i done MATH1141 last semester and i found it ok, but i want to know whether to continue to do 1241 or drop down to 1231. Are the finals between the two vastly different? i.e. does 1241 have questions like the H and X difficulty questions from the course notes, because i found the 1141 paper way harder than 1131. I just want to know the differences between the two and whether these differences are similar to that of 1131 and 1141. Thanks

1231 is generally assumed to be easier, with 1241, content is the same but you have to learn extra (extension) stuff, whereas 1231 are allowed to skip it,
As my lecturer described it (and I think the book) the work you have to do in 1231 is basically 80% of what you have to do in 1241.
I've heard some rumour you can get scaled up if you do higher mathematics though? but someone else will need to confirm that

Well the recommended marks to do 1241 according to lecturers and tutors is a credit in 1141 or a distinction in 1131. Should be fine if you fall in either categories. Unless you have a really hard pressed timetable

According to my maths tutor, the exam marks for 1141 were scaled up; however, not a huge amount. The highest mark in 1141 was also not quite as high as that for 1131.

i got three 10/10 marks and one 9/10 for the class tests and all the online quizes and such 100%. It's the finals that dragged me down, it was one of the hardest maths exams i've done and it was nothing like the content in the class tests. And no my 1241 lectures currently are tuesday 9-11 and friday 9-11 with Blitz and Steele. My biggest worry is the difference in the final paper, if this year the 1231 exclusive questions will be harder than the exclusive questions for 1241

Class tests are meant to examine the concepts which you've been taught - they are meant to be easy since you have 20 minutes to do 5 or so questions so they aren't testing more than the basics. It's in no way representative of the exam, as you would know. Also, the higher stream does the same class tests as 1131 or 1231, so it's expected that you achieve 9/10 or 10/10. The final exam is the true nature of the course, so doing all the tutorial problems is the best way to know how hard the course is.

But having said that, I thought 1141 was relatively harder than 1241. IMO, if you are in the D range in 1141, then you should be able to achieve in the high D or HD range in 1241.

I didn't see the final for 1231, but I reckon it would have been similar to 1241. There was only 1 section which got most of the cohort stumped (an algebra section which was quite conceptual), but the rest was pretty standard for even 1231.

I would say to stay with 1241. If you are an engineering student, second year maths courses will feel much easier.

...not what I heard. The top mark in 1141 was 99...definitely less in 1131. In any case there would be lots more scaling for a middle placed higher student than a top one (who probably got nearly full marks anyway). Somehow the higher scaling means that the maximum mark that is possible in 1131 is only 95 or something like that.

There were students who got 100 in MATH1131. Tutor swore that the highest mark for MATH1141 was lower than that. Maybe my tutor lies, but I'll certainly believe him on the students getting 100 as some others in my tute agreed

I'm guessing that your tutor was talking about exam marks not final marks. It isn't possible to get 100 after scaling in 1131.

If you think you can do it then stay. You won't feel that it is much different/harder until the final exam by which it would be too late. Remember you need to pass that to pass the course...

Sorry, but this just isn't true. When there is a higher and ordinary course running together they always cap the max mark in the ordinary. For example the course handout for MATH2501 says:
The final marks in MATH2501 will be scaled with reference to final marks in MATH2601, taking into consideration the greater degree
of difficulty of MATH2601. As a result few, if any, High Distinction grades will be awarded in MATH2501, and no student will be
awarded a final mark of more than 90%.
In first year they scale up the non shared exam questions on the higher. If each 1131 question is worth 20 then the purely 1141 question might be worth 24, so if you get all of 1131 right you score 80, but getting all of 1141 would score you 92. (I don't know the actual numbers that they use... the lecturer who told me this was a bit vague) Anyway, when they add in all the class tests and stuff it and line up the 1131 and 1141 marks, even if someone gets every possible mark in 1131 (which I believe someone did last session), they can't get a mark in the high 90s.
