Hey guys, just a question regarding the amount of maths in various engineering courses:

1) Which engineering course contains the most amount and/or hardest mathematics (or is more maths intensive than other courses)?

2)Do you use all the maths taught in the course in your career or do you just end up forgetting it?

3) Is the maths taken up in various courses comparable to taking 4 unit maths out of a total of 10 units in terms of time studying/content?

I know there will be a large difference between different courses but if anyone is taking an engineering course or can link me some info regarding the amount of maths comprising the course that would be great, thanks.

i have only done one semester of subjects, so my views probably are not 100% correct.

1. i have heard from quite a few people that electrical engineering has the most maths

2. i cannot speak 100% correctly ( obviously because i dont have an engineering job), but you WILL end up using it, you dont just do it for fun lol.

3. in the first semester there were only a few fairly small things in maths 1a that were in 4 unit, and for semester two i have heard that the only really 4 unit stuff we do is 4 unit integration. Much of the (first year) uni courses are based on definitions, rather than actual maths.

what?? that's very different to how its done at Melbourne uni, first year is all basically an extension of highschool. From memory... If you did specialist maths then you will cover in Calculus 2: Limits, more on complex numbers and differentiation/integration with complex numbers, more integration techniques (trig substitutions, integration by parts, more on partial fractions), a lot on first and second order differential equations, functions of 2 variables and calculus of functions of 2 variables, including an introduction to partial differential equations, chain rule, grad, linear approximations. In Linear Algebra you will cover: solutions of linear systems using row reductions, reduced row echelon form ect... consistent and inconsistent systems..., Matrices (in more detail than school) , vectors (in more detail than school), lines and planes, subspaces, linear independence, basis, general vector spaces, inner product spaces, least squares estimation, eigenvalues and eigenvectors... The more theoretical, "definition-proof-theorem and repeat" type maths courses come in 2nd year or later.

Ahk thanks guys, also is there any probability whatsoever in the course? Secondly do you guys have maths exams like back in school? Like how do you get examined on your maths knowledge?

No probability. Of course there are exams like high school. In calculus 2, we had weekly assignments, mid semester exam & final exam (75% weighting).

There is abit of statistics and probability.

Pretty sure most engineering programs have some form of engineering probability in them.

Aww i thought he was talking about Calculus 2. Yeah i don't really know much above first year

yes there is a bit of probability in engineering, not heaps though.
