what kind of maths is involved in a business/commerce degree? if majoring in HR or marketing i assume there wouldnt be much and it wouldnt be very complicated, but from what i understand everybody does core subjects and some of these include maths. Is it difficult?

At UNSW, we do QMA and QMB. QMA is focussed on the time value of money (remember all those interest compounding calculations you did in Year 10 maths?) and the challenge is being able to apply maths to scenarios given. I heard it's changed a bit since when I did it but that was the gist to me.

QMB is statistics and is required in each uni. It's not that bad and you get to learn quite a few useful things like how statistics can be manipulated, but it can still be a very painful subject if you don't particularly like formulae and numbers.

Well the new UNSW Commerce degree won't have any maths oriented core subjects

qma is overkill imo

matrices? calculus? linear optimization? most majors wouldn't come close to needing em

You could easily get through a basic commerce degree with only general maths. In fact, in many ways general benefits you more than advanced, as the syllabus has a greater focus on statistics.

BEco and BComm are changing as of next year (or soonish), with QMB being the only core math subject for Commerce thereafter.
Next year? or soonish? if its next year, then great !

This is the bit i was concerned about, i dropped from 2 unit to general because of the workload, i couldnt allocate enough study time for it and wasnt doing as well as my class... i was reading some of the course outlines for UNSW and usyd, and it said stuff like "this level of mathes equates to a 60 in hsc mathematics", "note, students who did general will not have the knowledge to do this level of maths" ra ra ra

do most unis over bridging courses if you do find the maths difficult?

Most would, yes. Although, just because it states 60+ in Maths does not mean you couldn't cope. You mentioned you changed partially because of the workload. If your doing a commerce degree you will have external areas to focus on, and I'm sure your maths would improve. The only thing stopping you would be if Mathematics is a prerequisit to entering the course.
