Maths1001 or Maths1011 for Engineering? (1 Viewer)

Okay so i couldn't access my email for some time and was only able to today. I noticed i had received an email stating what type of Maths we should be doing depending on the level of Mathematics completed in the HSC.

Now it says to do Maths1001 if you have completed Extension 1 Mathematics and Math1011 if you have completed 2Unit Mathematics, i completed 2U, but it also says if you are doing an Extension 1 bridging course you should be fine, which i am doing and will complete on tuesday.

My question is would Maths1001 benefit me more doing engineering or should i take Maths1011 in order to maximize my marks?

So if you did MATH1011 you would have to do 1001 later anyways and then that would count towards your WAM not 1011

Yeah i thought Maths1001 would be required since they say that Ext 1 Maths should be assumed knowledge, i was just curious because of the email.

Subject: enrolling in the right calculus units of study

Dear MATH1001 students,

You are currently enrolled in a normal unit of study, MATH1001 Differential Calculus. This unit of study assumes that you have completed HSC Mathematics Extension 1.

If you have in fact completed HSC Mathematics Extension 2 (equivalent to 4 unit) with an achievement in Band E4, then you should be enrolling in the advanced version MATH1901 Differential Calculus (Advanced).

If, on the other hand, you have completed HSC Mathematics (equivalent to 2 unit), then you are likely to find MATH1001 too difficult, and should be enrolling in the fundamental version MATH1011 Applications of Calculus. Some of you may have anticipated this, and be about to complete the 3 unit Bridging Course, in which case you should be fine remaining in MATH1001.

Please contact me if you are not sure about any of this, and I am happy to give advice. You are in fact compromising your ability to obtain very high grades, and also to move further along appropriate pathways in mathematics beyond first year, if you enrol in a calculus unit of study in first year that does not suit your background.

Most of you will also be enrolled in MATH1002 Linear Algebra, and already have received an email from me. Enrolling in the right units of study is especially important for the calculus series of units of study MATH1111/1011/1001/1901.

well I haven't completed ext 2 maths so 1001 it is

In engineering, MATH1011 is only permitted as an exception for students who did not even do 2U maths in the HSC (ie they only did 2U general). Students in such a situation should really think seriously if they should be doing engineering at USyd, as even by doing 1011 (and the others) they will really struggle, and with any other engineering units that is mathematically based.

I did Extension 1 in year 11 and completed 2U in year 12, i asked my Ext 1 bridging course teacher what maths i should do, he said Maths1001 and said those who do the bridging course should be capable of doing it, so I'm taking his word on that.

As a rule, in doing Engineering, the higher the maths you do, the better. What's the use of maximizing your marks if you don't have enough maths to support your Engg; it's like some people on BoS wanting to drop to Gen Maths from 2U Maths (Advanced) so they can get better marks - what for?

For future readers of this thread:

Don't waste your time doing the MATH190* courses over the MATH100* ones

It has absolutely no impact on your degree, and is just available for you to challenge yourself, which if you're into then by all means take it up.
